TO FIGHT FARM PESTS.
NOXIOUS WEEDS ORGANISATION. From . the following extract from the Tarnta correspondence in a Taranaki exchange, ,it will be seen that some Taranaki settlers have decided to stand up and fight the pests, which may be summarised in tho term "noxious weeds":— "A public meeting , (says the correspondent) was held at Tarata.some little time ago with a view to forming a, Nosi, pus AVeeds Vigilance Committee to' prevent, the spreading of noxious weeds in tho district, and the following committee was appointed :—Messrs. F. J. Webb, K. Stewart, J. Smith, F. M. Standish, A. Corkill, J. Groive, E: A. Marshall, and T. K. Vile. All the roads in the district are represented on the committee. It was suggested at the meeting that as all the committeemen appointed . belonged to 'the Tara*a branch of the Farmers' Union the , union should take the matter in hand, and that the secretary, Mr. Vile, should act as secretary to the AVeeds Committee. "At a' Farmers' Union' committee meeting, .lipid on Saturday night last, it was decided that the union should take the matter up., ,: "'. "A meeting of the Noxious "Weeds Vigilance Committee was then held, and several .' rules were' laid down by.' the committee. The following are some of the rules:—That all report? of persons failing to. clear weeds shall be made in writing and signed by person reporting; that the ■■secretary shall treat all reports. as strietjy.-. private, and no names of persons reporting shall be divulged, unless the report proves fictitious; that the secretary, shall write ■ to persons reported three days before he shall, draw '..the noxious .weeds inspector's, attention to. the offenders; that the -committee-•shall meet on every second Monday anil 'fourth Saturday in'each month. > "It was decided that committeemen should draw the attention of farmers "to \the Cape elder and foxglove as likely to become_ pests.if not kept in check. . ■'. "It, is - expected that every farmer ,iri the district will, not s only clear his own weeds, but shall. insist .that his neighbour do the same. It is more than likely that persons, reported by the committee will be dealt with at once by the inspector." .[■'-.
