NOTES ON THE EACING. (By Telegraph—Special Reporter.) Palmerston, December 7. A very big crowd was present at Woodville to-day for the opening, day. of .the summer meeting, and there was some fine racing, which,, taken as.a whole, was productive of more excitement than many of the spring gatherings. Speculation, however, se6med to be restricted, this'being duo no doubt to the fact that the. issues were mainly regarded as very open. A feature of the meeting was the splendid starting of Mr'."C.' O'Connor. In tho Maiden Handicap' the large field gave no trouble at the barrier, and moved off to a beautiful start. Ahuapai, who is back to her. best form, was quickly in command, and led to tho willows, where Midnight Sun, after a severe buffeting, caught her.' Meanwhile Allurement had also threaded her way through, but when asked to pass tho leaders she swerved and shifted badly. The' two-year-old won by a length, with Ah.ua.pai and- Sir Knox in, that order. The winner's form was not very encouraging, in view of .his' Foal Stakes engagement. . " .Appin .was- favourite, in.-the Hack Hurdles, and Te Whetu also had a good following. Another good start was made, and Te Whetu was taken to the front. He outjumped Appin at the, first fence, and did the samo thing at the next. Passing the stand the pair, were •clear from the others. At the top of the course Appin got into the fence, and nearly unseated*, his rider. With half a milo to go, Millennial joined Te Whetu, and the pair came into the straight locked together. Millennial,- however, had tho most pace, and ran in a very comfortable winner. Merry Lawn was never near the leaders in the first ton furlongs, but ho finished very fast, and had the race been a little further would have won. ....... . . Several scratchings were announced in the Grandstand Hack Eace, but. still a good field of_fourteen runners went to the post. Speculation was very slack, indicating that the public regarded the raco as very open. A good start saw Succession take tho lead after a furlong had been covered, and she drew out from the field, winning easily'by several lengths. Leahora was second the whole way, and Merry 'Frank, who failed to begin with his big weight, finished well and got third place. Vite also finished well, and was just behind Merry Frank. Bauparatia, who had shown good form at Masterton and Carterton, was made favourite in the principal handicap. Ho had | the .services of H. Gray, and moved well' in his preliminary. NVoodhey and Sandstr.oam both looked well also, while Te I'uia showed less barrel than was the case with her atDnnnovirke. St. Felix was very sore as the result of a bad knocking about during shunting operations at Palmerston North. First Battery led passing the stand, followed-by Mataari, .with tho field well bunched. Down the back Mataari took- charge, but the whole field wns in a cluster, nnd the race was one of tho prettiest , ever seen on the course. Across the bottom the colours of To Puia were prominent, while lianparaha also improved his position, and Woodhey'followed him through. In the run . homo the favourite easily disposed of Mataari, but was hard pushed to beat Woodhey, who, as usual, finished very fast. Bighd.cn got a' luelt'y run on the rails, and secured third place, just in front of Goodwin Park. St. Felixwas tho last to finish. A great "boil over" resulted in. the Flying Hack Kace, when Lady Moutoa won very comfortably, and defeated a large There was a great deal of bumping after tho start, and several horses had their chances affected. Vibration and Bunkum were both well backed, rat-ran badly, as did Turna, who got /a bad passage,-

Heavy clouds began to roll over just ■before the start of the Borough Handicap, but the rain held off: 'Sea Queen, a warm favourite, began smartly, and was soon joined by Merchantman. This pair drew out from the field, and'had a big break at the turn. Here Merchantman retired, and Sea Queen was also feeling the pace. Flingot put in a great run, and wore her down, and Waipunui also headed her in the'last few strides. The remainder of the field was strung out, ... . '.

The Hack Welter event provided the most exciting race of the day. Patrpbua opened up favourite, huge money being put on-.him.- Then Ariom and Serenity came into the market, and tho latter finished up at a short price. Passive gave a great deal of bother at the barrier, but, after a little delay, the field moved oil' in a line, and the starter was loudly cheered.. Stevens was.the first to showout, and, down the back, the. colours of San Lass and Hangikapua i were prominent. Here Patrobus and- Serenity both got blocked several times, -At the straight entrance Passive was in behind Stevens, and just clear of San Lass, and in turn, the names of the trio were hailed as tho winner, and the three jockeva (Deploy, Reid; and Eyan) settled down to get the most out of tljteir mounts The crowd yelled itself hoarse, and urged the;riders on. In-the final few yards nan Lass stayed on the best, and beat Passive by a head, with Stevens a length away. Patrobus was'close'tip fourth, followed by Ariom and Serenity.' ' In the Electric Handicap ' the candidates gave some trouble at the barrier, and.it was some minutes before the start was made. Contrary' to .expectations,Naumai failed to got to the front, therunning being made by War Song and' Mor «ytpS while Pimkau and-Tigerene' dwelt badly at the barrier. Fannus' was. next to the leading pair at the him into the straight, but he could not makeany impression on them.'Fifty yards off the port the pair were locked to, getner, and, in a snlendid finish Morevkoff won by a head. \ SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. .
