REGISTRATION OF BARMAIDS.

4 _ . THE QUESTION OF IDENTIFICATION. , If a registered barmaid leaves the qountry, what is to prevent her parting with or selling her certificate to another who wishes to take up work in New Zealand? This question was put to the official of the Labour Department who is drafting the regulations in regard to the registration of barmaids. He confessed that the' point had also occurred' to him, and even ventured to suggest that it might bo necessary to have the barmaids photographed* or take their thumb prints as a" means of identification. The point, however, was not a very important one as" it would not affect the number of bar- I maids however much "the • changes were rung." Another point in the Licensing Amendment Act of the recent session.was the provision that an applicant for registration must have been in work for three months during the year preceding the. coming into force of the Act. The official assumed that the greater number of applications for registration would be made by post. On their receipt forms would be sent out to bo .filled in, and on their return steps would be taken by the agents of the Department to verify the particulars contained therein, especially- that ■'' referring to the applicant's term of service, during the past-twelve months'. No" registration can take place 1 until after the regulations are gazetted.
