PROPOSED VANCOUVER MAIL
STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. When tho vote of £3666 for tho SanFrancisco mail service was readied during consideration of the Supplementary Estimates on Saturday morning, Mr. Allen (Bruce) asked tho Prime Minister to state the present position in regard to tho proposed Vancouver service. Sir Joseph Ward said lie cabled to Sir Wilfrid Laurier offering a subsidy of £20,000 if tho steamers could call at Auckland, and ho also cabled to tho Federal Primo Minister asking if hisGovernment would agree to such aii arrangement. Tho reply was that tho Federal Government could not agree. Thoy. wanted tho steamers to caU at more than one port in Australia. Tho Canadian Government, on its part, would not agree to confine tho servico to Australia, and the matter was standing over until-the throo countries camo into line. New Zealand would pay nothing unless tho steamers would call at Auckland and ho was using bis best endeavours to bring that about-. Mr. Malcolm (Clutlia) asked whether there was a prospect of a servico between Canada, and New Zealand only. Tho Primo Minister replied that ho had cabled to Sir Wilfrid Laurier asking what subsidy would be required for such a service, but had not yet had a reply. Answering a question hy Mr. Horrio3, the Prime Minister said that tho San Francisco service, via Tahiti, would be :niitiniied until the House could consider it next session, even if tho-Vau-;ouvor service were brought into opera:ion in .tho meantime. If both were -mining tliat would amount t-o a fort-light-ly servico. Why do Customs work when for a 1 small outlay you can get us to do :ho work? Leading.firms employ ns. it < >ays them.
