SCHOOL COMPETITIONS.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRIZES., The committee appointed by the Wek, lington Education Board for the .purpose of considering the question! of the annual school competitions for prizes awarded by the Chamber of Commerce reported \o tho board ■' yesterday that it had conferred with the Council of the Chamber of Commerce as to the beat mode of giving effect to the Chamber's wishes for the increase of efficiency in certain subjects. The chairman of the Chamber stated that the prizes weTe given, with a view to the increase of efficiency to "the highest degree attainable in the subjects of arithmetic, writing, and English, and that it was satisfied that ■ the mode ",of examination with a view to attaining this in tho best possiblo manner should be left in tho hands of the Education Board. ' . ,

Mr. Robert Lee (chairman) said that ho had been the examiner for the last four years, hut on. the last, occasion some little exception, .from a quarter which he would not name,, was taken to his methods of examination. ■ Mr. Vile: .Why. not. set up .a supervising committee of the three city members? " . Mr. A. W. Hogg, M.P., said that the competition should be of an interschool character; they would, then find the best boy and jrirl in the city schools. The chairman pointed out that everybody was opposed to that idea. Mr. Hogg replied that , there- was only £25. Why not have a general scramble? The chairman, with some show of impatience, retorted that it was np use Mr. Hogg trying to set up a new system of his own. Ho was quite out'of order. It was finally decided that -the city members of the board, with the chairman and the chief inspector, should act as an examination committee.
