The Wellington Garrison Officers' mess dinner at the. Hotel Windsor on Monday evening was h Tory successful function lieu.-Colonel G. PC. Campbell, president of the Officers' Club, was in the chair, and had on his right his Excellency the Governor (Lord Islington), and on his left the Hon. D. Budda (Minister for Internal Affairs), who attended as representative' of the Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward), who was unable to get away from his Parliamentary duties There were also present: Colonel A w' Robin, C.B. (Chief of the General Staff)' Colonel H. J. Collins, V.D.; 1.5.0., Colonel Stuart Newall/C.8., Colonel W E Collins, Lieutenant-Colonels J. E. Purdy' E. W. C. Chaytor, J. Duncan, We' Duthie, ,T. St. Jta-son, officers of the Perl manent Staff, the Wellington Garrison active list (unattached), and retired list' Mr. R. Kerr-Glark. private secretary to the Governor, and Captains Hamilton'aud Maitland were also present. The Anglican- Bishop of Wellington (Dγ Hallis) sent an apology, for his 'unavoidable absence. ; •The toasts were purely of a complimentary nature. Proposing the toast of "His Excellencyi" Colonel Robin felicitously referred to the fact that their Ciovcrnor nnd Conimander-in-Cliief had earned distiucton in war, as well as in peace New Zealand, he went on lo say, now stood in the forefront of the Empire in having faced squarely the question of compulsory training. The members of Ihe Officers' Club, he' concluded, acknowledged their grateful thanks to the.Governor for the very helpful interest he had taken in the institution during the session which, had just closed. • His ExcDllency.V reply appears under a separate heading. The only other toast was "The Rt. Hon. the Defence Itinister" (proposed by' Colonel li. ,T. Collins, and responded to by file Hon.
