MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
•(Before Mr. W, G. Eiddeli; S.M.) POSED AS A POLICEMAN. John Mulligan pleaded not guilty tq a chargo of being an idle and'disorderly person, without lawful means of support. Accused is- a half-caste Australian native, and somewhat resembles a Joca! police constable. The police, evidence was to the effect that the man had been in tbo city for about a fortnight. About midniglit on Monday last Constables Thompson and Snow heard a scream in Customhouse-Quay, and, on going to investigate, they found Milligan in company with a woman named Violet Paton, who, stated that Mulligan had represented himself* as a policeman, and had threatened to arrest her if she- did not give him £1. Accused was convicted and ordered tn come up .for. sentence when called upon, on condition that he left the city before noon .to-day. UNCUSTOMED GOODS. Charles John Hobden,. chief- , steward' of the steamer Ara-wa, was charged with knowingly harbouring certain-.un-customed goods, namely, silver plate, valued at £5, brassivare valued at £4, and drapery valued at £1.. Accused pleaded guilty; and was not represented by counsel. ■ The Magistrate imposed a fine of £30, but as it was' accused's first offence, tho line.was reduced to £10, with costs 75., tho goods tot be forfeited, Default was fixed 14 days' imprisonment. .SEAMAN REFUSED DUTY. William Brown, - an \ articled' sqaman on the steamer Drayton Grange, pleaded guilty to a charge of wilfully, disobeying tho commands of the.- chief eugmeer between November 22 and November 28.: Mr. A. Blair appeared on uehalf of tho ship's- agents. - , Accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, and ordered'to pay court ees, ,7s. In the event of the ship leaving the Dominion, before- the expiry of the sentence, he was to be placed aboard. . - OTHER CASES. Waltor Hasler, appearing on remand, was charged with criminally assaulting a girl three, years of age on November U. Hβ was further remanded for a week. Jesse Underwood, on a charge of drunkenness, was fined 10s.;. in default 48 hours', imprisonment, a prohibition order to ■.. issuo against him for one year. One first offending inebriate was hned , os., in default 24 hours' imprisonment; CIVIL BUSINESS. AFTER THE TENANT LEFT. Robert Rolleson, settler, of 62 Hamilton Road, North Kilbirnie, claimed £6 12s. from Thonias Edward ,Bucknell cleric, of Wellington Road, 'Kilbirnie, for alleged damage done-, to the property of the plaintiff, which damage, it was stated, had been, discovered after the tenant (Bupknell) left. Mr. P. Levi appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. E. C. Levvey for defendant. '

' Harrj-, Hooper, commission agent, of Wellington, claimed £25 from Ernest ; Johns', and Alfred Johns, farmers ' (as executors:,of: William Henry Johns, deceased); and Mary Johns, widow, all of Mungaroa, as commission oh the exchange of. property.'situated:in Northland for a farm owned by Wm. Joseph Ferkins, builder, of Wellington. Mr. ■A. B-. Atkinson apneared for plaintiff and Mr. D. Jackson for ,defendants.
