Sister Moody Bell is to give a lecture on that absorbing subject "Sweethearts" in the Druids' Hall on Tuesday night. ' ' ■•■ -This week tho Vcn. Archdeacon Fancourt presided at a meeting of parishioners of the Vcn. Bede's church; when tho question of obtaining a resident Anglican clergyman for tho district was discussed. He stated that tho rule laid Sown by tho General Synod was that parochial districts should be formed by tho Bishop and Standing Committee, if the Bishop .saw any reasonable prospects. Mr. Compton's district was a very large one, and it was an impossibility for him to be in two places at once. The.question was: How was a resident clergyman to bo supported? Even in large, towns like Wellington the stipend only amounted to £400 and a house, and this'with tho style of ■ living they were obliged to maintain, was barely sufficient. In country districts tho stipend, did not exceed £250 and a house, and, in some exceptional cases,' it was less thair£2oo. ■■ Was this' district abloto raiso £250? Ho would ask for a grant from the general church funds. The new district, which, roughly speaking, would consist of 'Shannon and Tokoraaru, would probably not be constituted until'next session of the Synod. Mr. W. H.' Gunning stated that tho 'present assessment of the Ven. Bede's church was £44 per annum, and/lie thought this could be easily doubled if a resident minister wcro appointed. Mr.. J. It. White stated that. Tokoraaru contributed £18 per annum, and he thought that they could easily make it.;£4o. One- gentleman had : already promised £10. Mr. Gunning referi red to tho flaxmill hands in'tho district, which must number 400; amongst whom services could bo held. Mr. C. B. Robinson moved that members' of the present meeting should form-α-commit-jteo to canvass tho district, and that jtlio representatives of .tho Toltomaru Vestry should .'liold a meeting and make similar arrangements.. The Ven. Arcli"deaeon Faneourt said that £40 would be-the'maximum, grant I'made by the Synod. ■■ ■ ' '.' >■?■■;<-:■■<<"] CREYTOWN.
