Milcy, has arrived and gone into training for tho coming carnival. "Dick" Arnst informed Milcy that he intends nominating for tho Axemen's Cup, being desirous of trying his skill against champion axemen. Though entries have closed the nomination would be nccctped as a late one. PREACH OF PROMISE. Chrlstchurch, November 25. In tho Supremo Court tin's morning Elizabeth Gunn, waitress, claimed £250 from Charles Wesley Hayes, commercial traveller, for breach of promise. The evidence showed that defendant had broken the engagement three weeks before the date fixed for the marriage. An interesting point was that defendant, in breaking the engagement, had declared that ho was being threatened with a breach of promiso action by another girl. Ho incidentally quoted fictitious interviews with Mr. Alpers, who appeared for plaintiff in the present case. Mr. Alpers created some amusement by repudiating the bad law attributed him by tho defendant. There was virtually no defence on the facts, and the judge fixed damages at £40, with costs. AUCKLAND COMPETITIONS. Auckland, November 25. On charges of having illegally sold beer at Tewera on November 5, Ellen Mounsey, who pleaded" guilty, was fined £30, with £1 13s. costs, at the Magistrate's Court this' morning. . Her busband, John Mounsey, was also fined £5, with 7s. costs,, on. a charge, of storing liquor for sale. At tho same sitting a man named. James Bailey, on a. charge of following and using .obscene'■ language to a lady, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment without the option of a fine. LAND BALLOT. Timaru, November 25. In the shearing-shed hands case, before the Arbitration Court, .the employers raised the point that the formali-' ties to the proper placing of the'dispute .before the Court had not been observed.
