. ' THE DROWNING AT PETONE. AN INQUEST HELD. .An inquest was held by Dr. M'Arthtir at Petoue yesterday afternoon concerning tlio death of the unknown man who was drowned off Petono water'front on Thursday. Evidence was .given to the effect that deceased was seen to approach tlio beach and prepafts for a bath, and also that he was subsequently seen '''swimming and splashing in the, water. Tho police -intimated that as yet the body had not been identified. A verdict of "Found ■ drowned" was returned. Inspector Ellison received ■ a telegram from Carterton.last night, stating that, tho body found at Petone is,believed to bo that of a man named Thomas; Johnson. "When Mr. Booth gavo him an order to get a bed at Carterton, he thought tho man was Johnson, who worked for him for three weeks about i four years ago. The- man suffered from rheumatics, and said that he had lately been in Rotorua. Johnson is understood to have had a daughter in tho Auckland district, but itfs not known in what town she resides. . INJURED ON THE WHARF. ; While worsuig alongside the Monowai at N0..14 berth, Jervois Quay, yesterday afternoon, a wharf labourer named James Tolley had tho misfortune to sustain a fracture of the right log. It appeare that about 4.15 p.m. Tolley, in company with half-a-dozen other men, was.working sheet-iron. Ho was wheeling a trolley well loaded when.the sheet-iron shifted, causing the load to fall over on the man, with the result mentioned. Dr. Henry attended him, and ordered his removal to the hospital, where he is doing well. Ho is a singlo man, 28 years of age, and resides at 23 Garrett Sreet. FOOT CRUSHED IN A QUARRY. A single man named Wm. O'Sullivan, aged 37, residing at 76 Dixon Street, was admitted to the hospital yesterday, sufforing with a crushed foot. • Tho injury was sustained in a stone quarry. COMMERCIAL TRAVELLER'S DEATH. f (By Tolotrapli.—Press Association.! Christchlirch, November 25. Edmondstone \ Driver, commercial traveller, died in Christchurch Hospital yesterday. The medical evidence at the inquest showed that death was due to Bright's disease.. . SUICIDE AT DUNEDIN. Dunadin, November 25.. Aaron Faigan, about thirty-five years of age, carrying on businfess as a tailor in fianover Street, committed suicide to-day by • cutting his. throat. Mrs. Faigan states that her husband had been worrying for tho last week over being called as a witness in a prosecution. All this morning lie was in ' a very nervous state, and his wife took razors from him twice. Faigan said ho must go out, and ho asked his wife not to follow him. She went only as far as the backyard, thinking ho had nothing with him with which he could injure himself. Deceased stood with his back to the door for a while, and then suddenly turned round and slammed the door. Mrs. Faigan hurried to him,.and a- struggle ensued, but she was- unable to prevent him from cutting his. throat with a knife. Mrs. Faigan also stated that deceased had been worried .over tho receipt of an anonymous letter demanding money, under threat of charging him with a serious offence. Ho had been further worried over administering the estate o"f his father, of which he was one of ] the trustees. ■ BODY FOUND IN A DAM. Napier, November 25. The- Napier polico received information from tho constable at Porangahau yesterday that the body of a man named Henry Francis Wright, aged 32 years, had been found in a dam at Oakbourne Station on Thursday. The body was fully dressed, and there is nothing to show how deceased got into the water.
