THE NEW HEBRIDES.
NAVAL OFFICER'S VIEWS. By TelcEraph- -Press Jssociation-OoDjTiEht. Sydney, November 25. One of tho officers of H.M.S. Pegasus, which has been visiting tho Islands, commenting on Dr., Nicholson's statement regarding the failure of tho Anglo-French Commission in the Now Hebrides,, declared -that no complaints had been made when'tho Pegasus was at the Islands.. So far as ho could see, tho Commission was working' satisfactorily. A little troublo occasionally arose at Tanua over recruiting, but it would bo absurd to compare it with the. old "blaekbirding" days of recruiting,- , and was practically confined to Tanna.
As regards Banks Islands, somo of the officers of the Pegasus wero of the opinion that there was good ground for tho Bishop of Melanesia's statement that selling of grog and kidnapping and illtreatmont of natives wero rife there.
