Many people have been rendered homeless. ';■...' The telephone system was wrecked. . ■ Reports are coming from inland. They show that- the damage done thero was more serious. than ; at first thought. Many houses, crops,'and gardens were destroyed. . :■•"• ■ . Gangs of prisoners are at work, clearing tho Broome .streets of fallen trees 'and other debris. ... So far as is known, three whites were drowned..- ■ .. - ' • . ■ Many lost their luggers, laden with pearl shell, and probably pearls. It is therefore difficult to estimate the damage. • : ' : ■■-■■- The beach is strewn with thousands ■ of dead seabirds and fish, showing the severity of the hurricane. '.; Later reports show that some of the •missing luggers managed to reach places of safety along the coast, though in a battered and dismasted condition. Eight or nine, with approximately 24 hands, are still unaccounted for.
