SHOCKING ACCIDENT. A WELL-KNOWN OFFICER KILLED. (Uy Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) IViastertoii, November 25. A shocking accident occurred on the road between Temii and Whakataki today, when Mr. Alexander M'-Eutchon, clerk to tho Cas'tlepoint County Council, was killed. .Deceased, in company witli tho Rev. .Mr. Phillips, was driving down the Whakataki Hill.when tho liorsqs shied and bolted. Both occupants wero thrown out of the vehicle, but tho Rev. Mr. Phillips escaped with cuts about the face, and a severe shaking. . Mr. M'Hutchon retained hold of the reins, and was dragged for some distance, when be was brought into violent collision with tho end of a culvert. His neck was broken. Deceased, who was exceedingly popular, was seventy years of age. He came 'to tho Dominion in the ship' Hastings in 1859, and had'lived for over forty years at Whakataki, where ho ,oi;co conducted a store. Ho had been a member of tho Masterton County Council, ■ the Masterton Licensing Bencli, and various other local' bodies. lie was also a justice, of tho peace, and a prominent member of-.the -Masonic-fraternity. Ho loaves a'widow and an adopted daughter. ■'-'-'■' ■ : A young - settler of this district, made one'on two. attempts to take,,his life this week. • Ho -was this afternoon committed to a mental hospital.
