NEW BUILDING IN BRANDON STREET.

; Tho.noTr building of Messrs.-Chap-v man, Skerrctt, Wylio. and Tripp, in Brandon Strcot, is now practically, ready for occupation, and as it is in several ways a striking and . novel structure, it naturally attracts considerablo attention.' .It,is on tho. north side of the'street, arid replaces tho old wooden structure that has stood theiu sinco the corporation leases wero first taken up, many years ago. It has a frontage of 60 feet, and runs back 8G feot,, and consists of four floors, and a flat roof. ' l -:■ • . On entering the building, the visitor is struck by tho solid, clean appearanco of tho place, and, considering that it is not a corner building, with tho large amount of light in rooms and corridors. Ho cannot also fail to notice the absence of the surface work, which' so often disfigures buildincs of this

9 class. Everything secnis to lmvo been thought out beforehand, and all casings for lislit and telcphono wires have been embedded in the concrete, and are out of . sight,' a matter of credit to all concerned. After passing; through tlio entrance hall, tho elevator (one of Turnbull and Jones's "Standard" type), and staircase aro reached, both of which are excc-ediiigly well lighted. There is nothing remarkable about the scries of rooms which each floor presents, excepting that they aro all very airy and well lighted, two important desiderata in all offices. The wholo building • is constructed of fcrro-con-creto, including tho flat roof, which is covered with Nouchatel asphalt, and the only wood in tho placo is that used in tho doors, architraves, and windows. Skirtings and other dust trans aro avoided, sunk beads being sufficient to

relievo 'the wall surfaces, and to mark the ckango in colour between the different parts. Tho building is well supplied with etrong-rooms, there beinp; two largo ones on each floor, the lavatories are woll lighted, and conveniently placed; in fact, everything seems "up-to-date," and eminently satisfactory. ■■ . Tho contractors for the building are Messrs. ■ Watte Brothers, tho sub-con-tractors, being. Messrs. Levestarn- and Wells for tho plumbiii" and the hotwater heating, which iscarried through the -whole building; Mr. T. A. Wells, for tho painting; Mr. R. T. Walls and Co., for',tho electrical work; Mr. R. Martin, for the glazing, to all of whom great credit is duo for their eycellont work. Mr. F. de J. Cloro was the architect, for tho building, and.Mr. J. I G. Bortiusliaw,. clerk of works.
