ATHLETICS.

[Hi fItaCEUY.)

FIXTURES. December 7.—Civil Service Club's evening meeting. , December 3.—Auckland A.A.C. Spring Meeting. Hill v. Harding. , December 10.-W.A.A.C. Spring' Carnival (Basin Reserve). . : , January 14.—Wellington - Provincial Championships (Basin Keserve). Next Saturday, at Auckland. Next Saturday the Auckland A.A.C. is to hold its spring meeting, and the occasion has been made the means of bringing together the two amateur mid-dle-distance, cracks, Guy Harding, of Napier, tho quarter and half-mile champion, and L. Hill, of Auckland, tho Dominion's champion miler. They will meet over a distance of 1000 yards, and incidentally

an attack on the existing record for the distance, now held by. Guy Haslcins, is intended. It may bo . remembered that ■ Harding 'assailed these figures last Boxing Day, when on the invitation of the Wanganui Club' he journeyed thither, and after a splendid run was timed to have knocked the record endways, only to find that, on-the course being remeasured for certificate purposes, it had been laid out four yards short. Even then, Harding's actual time, with the proportional addition for theso four yarus, came easily within' the record figures, so something brilliant should eventuate- on December 3 if the Domain is in good order. ' ■ Auckland and Scepticism, Whilst.. on the subject of Auckland athletics, it appears that "Prodigal," of the "Referee," is sceptical about recent performances there. .Hβ, says: "In looking ; over' my Auckland exchanges I notice that at the recent King's College sports on tho local Domain track, J. C. "Whitney was credited with spmo 'taking performances— running broad jump, 20ft. lOJin., and 220 yards in 22 3-ssec, amongst others. In the last-named event Whitney clipped 2sec. off the collego record. However, fast and all as the Domain track is, I must confess to having doubts about the accuracy of the timeit: seems rather too good to bo correct. If it was correct, Whitney must bo almost in the Woodger class among Dominion sprinters." Woodgeri : W.A. Woodger has announced his intention of competing at the AV.A.A.C. meeting on December 10. The Australa-. sian champion has done lio running so far this season except for a fleeting appearance ■■ in his quarter section of tho half-milo relay at tho Boys' Institute meeting, and this, his first earnest endeavour, should prove a good draw. He is satisfied with his ability to reduce tho New Zealand, record. for . the 220 yards that he established in tho provincial championships last season on tho Basin Reserve, ami intends. having a 'go at it when fairly wound up. Karori Club's Meeting., . '. Tho only local gathering during the week was .the .evening meeting oi .t id. recently-formed Karori A.A.C. The aiYair, tho first attempt of the kindi of the suburban body, was well run-by Secretary Jordan, who provided a nice track with - the .sprinting course properly strung, an'd a handy little programme of five events, a 75 yards handicap of two heats and final, and- 220 -yards and haltmile handicaps. In the short sprint, Dawson shared Hie scratch mark with 11. A. Robertson, who justified tho handicappcr's judgment; of his pacoby beatin" the old hand comfortably. Rolwrtson has shown to advantage in past seasons in tho Banks sports, and with proper caro is capable of good work in open company. Ho won his heat in 8 l-sseo., tho timo being assisted,by a flying start, and ran second in tho final, won an 8 2-ssco.-by G. W.-Davits off 31 yards. In Davies, tho Karori Club Ims another sprinter of much promise. This runner also won the furlong distanco with 11 yards off Robertson, who again ran second in 21 3-ssec. 'Tho-half-mile was won handily by A. Kennedy, with 8 yards off 13. Prendeville, in 2min.' 9 2-ssec, a sound performance considering that the ivinuer ran barefooted. This is another miner who should provo a good asset to tho now club.
