Navy League Concert. In a naval and-military entertainment one always looks, for something and original, and last evening's programme presented some vary interesting and amusing, features. The quips of Bes. • P.O. Houchen in the skit upon."H.H.S. Pinafore" were quite irresistible to the audience, some of them being decidedly to tho point. Chief Stoker Fuller (-H-.M.S.,En-- ,' counter) was Siost entertaining, and delighted. . his audience hugely, especially tlie boys, who hung upon his every movement. The drill,-too; was -verj' interesting; io watch, and seemed to be done all , as one man. Tho prizes for essays written by the children of the various schools , upon the Nnvy League were presented by .' his Excellency Lord. Islington. The stage • 'of, the To\vn Ball had been altogether transformed into .all ordinary 6tagb tlea.tr<v covered in -with heavy dark red curtains, which sometimes did. not, effect a total eolipse of the performer, - owing to his mistaken judgment as to the. podnt on which , it would descend. Occupying the front'seats of tho hall wero his Excellency Lord Islington and Captain Hamilton, A.D.C., his, Excellency the Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Poore, the Mayoress (Mrs. Wilford), who wore a black:crepe de chine dress with a cloak of silver tissue; Captain . and Mrs. ' AVemyss, the latter wearing a black silk dress and wliite leco scarf, Mr. Hnrcouit and sonic-of the officers- of the squadron. ' . Mrs..'Firth,, "vice-president of the Navy League ;■ Miss'-Barcourt,--and Mrs.Shirtcliffe, also connected with the . League, ■ wero present; '' "; . The' Children's: Outing. ; Wellington ,was > not- itwlf at :all yesterS day, the obsession. beginning, at an early ; hour in tho morning, when' tho men | from tlio warships :in port inarched :! fhrougb the city to the sound of uncomj mon musical strains, and lasting till ' about, six in the evening, when tho hundreds of children 1 who poured into the city in tho morning from tho country districts finally departed, wearied but fiill of all they had seen, to their homes, it was-a-most eventful day to many; of ■ them, and'it'seems hard to realise that ■ there, are'numbers'of children who havo .never sea, mpch less a 'warship. 'Town ' ? w ; as''' quite a revelation-, and ono jpict; 3 thom;.ovefyifhere making t|io most of 'owryfinfn'dte of their littlo 'jaiint. , it iva's quite amusing to hoar tho boys talkrng about what tliey had seen, and what 'they_ had gathered about the guns and life jn tho Navy. Some wero completely captivated, and: for them there-was no- : thing to ..bo compared to life jn the Navy.' Will it last? So .few youtiful fancies do. ,Homß from .England, ' Miss E. Richmond'arrived in Wellington. yesterday, by the Main Trunk line , from Auckland, returning' after a long visit to and its neighbouring countries'. '.'Miss Richmond has niany re- -i latives," and there was quite a large gatli- ' ering of them at the-railway station to - welcome lier back to -New Zealand.- ' ■ •; Missions to Seamen.
