The' sixth series of eales commenced on Wednesday, and it is interesting to note that crossbred wool is realising up to the values current at the September-Oc-tober sales. Inferior merinos arc slightly lower ,but this is the only cliango noted. The attendance of buyers is reported large, and competition is active. It is lust possible under these circumstances that values may improve as tho sales progress. With labour unrest, a high bank rate, and political disturbance, it is really wonderful to eco wool maintain its position. With respect to, the future, • the following remarks by aB expert are interesting:— . "As regards contracting for tops to do delivered in the early months of ,1911, the most recent cable advices from AustTalia have tended to put a check on this lino of business, for. while spinners aro apparently not unwilling to cntrage themselves at about 2d. per lb. below the prices current on spot transactions,, ton makers feel uncertain as to whether they aro wise in committing themselves extensively to deliver during tho first Quaxtor of next year on such a. basis. Accordingly, they are inclined to hold their hand a bit until such time as immediate renuirements have been provided for in the oversea markets, and .some .caeing in values there may enable them to go on with more assurance as to their position. Spinners and manufacturers aro not ob- • livious to the possibilities of tho future. • Whilst they arc amply provided with • work for a' considerable timo to come, they are conscious that, if prices have to , be further raised for fino yarn and fabrics, there may be a turn from worsteds to cheaper fabrics of various kinds, in-^ • eluding tweeds, on this account, there- - fore, thev deem it advisable, to go slow i and watch tho course of events warily. 1 In the General run of crossbred descrip- , tions, business is not extensive, but inquiries tend to becomc more numerous. 3 Attemptn to prepare the way for the com- ■ ing'season in Australasia and South America by foreshadowing a largo increaso in 1 supplies do not meet with success,- and I what little business is being done iu tho 5 way of selling tops for delivery next year e j 8 at prices very slightly below current e Quotations. The increased consumption 3A jumA wiartcra considered capablo
of, absorbing whatever ndditional supplies .may come from New Zealand, nnd little augmentation ifi looked for in tho coming River Plato clip." - Customs revenue collected at the port of Wellington yesterday amounted to £138 156. 9d. \ WHEAT.
