Two men named Brown and Young were firing shots at the three hundred feet level of the Senate mine, when ono went off before Brown reached tiio ladder leading to safety, arid a rock struck and injured him. Young, who had reached ■tho ladder, jumped down again and was assisting his wounded companion to climb up ■ when a second shot. exploded) and, a flying stone injured Young's hip. In spite of his own injuries, however, . he persevered till ho placed Brown in a place of safety, his task boing made the more perilous owing to a running fusilade of thirteen' other shots exploding beneath them.
