NO LIQUOR.

• BOWLING CLUBS IN NO-LICENSE AREAS. Tho bowler is'a kindly, genial man, and as a rule is not averse to a friendly tot of ijhisky with, his opponent after , a hard-fought contest.. At the 'same time, ..there aie. many who prefer the homel.v cup of tea in preference. to anything stronger. Up till the' passing of the ■ newest Licensing Act, it. was a moot point as to whether fowling, clubs in "No-License" areas could'supply liquor to theiT members, and, as the .case has jiover been tested, clubs have kept liquor on the premises for the regaling of members. It looks now as if this, privilege has been abolished by a ■ provision: in. the new Act, and certain clubs in the Wellington '.South.; district^-a' "No-License" urea—have ■ already . taken .action by removing all intoxicating liquor- from the premises. Tho clauses in question are as follow:—. ~ ; "It shall not 1 be lawful within any ■No-License district, or . within' any area to which Section 273 of the prin- ■ cipal Act is applicable, for any person to store or keep liquor for any' ' other person, or'to lease, let, hire, or . permit or suffer to bo used any build- | ing or place belonging;to or occupied ; . by him or in his possession or under his control, or «ny part of any such . -building or place, for the purpose of : . storing or keeping, therein or theron', any liquor for or by any other person. ' . Every, person who commits a breach of this section is liable for a: first offence to a fine not exceeding .fifty; . pounds, and'for a' second or any sub-Y 1 : t 6e'quent offence.to'.imprisonment' for eny term' not exceeding three months." , .... Some clubs have, a "no-license" policy if 'their own. '11l this case, those'who ■fish -to'have' at . their'- disposal liquor, other , than non-intoxicant,, have had to purchase it themselves. outside the district apd keep it in their bowl lockers, but this system, also crumples up under ;the above-quoted provision l .. So it means tea or nothing for the future on bowling greens' in "No-Licenso" areas. Those affected in' Wellington are . the Newtown, ■Wellington and Hataitai Bowling "Clubs.
