Captain D. C. Spencer Smith, of the Royal Artillery, has been appointed btaliOilicer to Major-General A. P. Godley, Commandant of the New Zealand Forces.. Captain Smith is due at Sydney to-day, by the Otway, on- which vessel are also Lieutenant-Colonel E. S. Heard (Director of Military Training and Education), and Lieutenant-Colonel Burnett-Stuart (Director of Military Operations and Intelligence). All three officers nro expectcd to reach AVellington • next week.
Mr. D. J. Nathan returned from a visit to Australia by the Marama yesterday..
Among the passengers to arrive from Sydney yesterday was Mr. Thomas Ashman, late proprietor of the Albert Hotel, Willis Street, who has been enjoying a long holiday in South Africa, England, l and the Continent. Mr. Ashman's .health has been greatly benfhted by the trip. Dr. Doherv, of Sydney, Dr. and Mrs. Brandon, and Mr. A. T. Bate, of AVel-. lington, arrived from Sydney by tho Marama yesterday.
Mr. AVilliam Short, ""tho King s Trumpeter/' having completed^'his work as adjudicator in the bnnd contests at the Ballawit competitions, >is at present in Melbourne, where ho intends to remain until January next, when he will leave for New Zealand -to adjudicate in the Palmerston North competitions. : He expects to return to Australia in time to catch a mail steamer which will land him in London by the end of March. His Excellency Lord Islington has notified the secretary of the AVellington Amateur Athletic Club (Mr. F. Crewes) that Ko will accept the position of patron of the club.
- Among the passengers by the Tainui, due to arrive at AVellington from London on Saturday, are Mr. and Mrs. J. Busliby (who are about to settle in the Nelson district); Mr. and Mts. AA. Emery and the Misses Emery, of Dunedin; Dr. St. L. H. Gribben, of Christchurch;'Mr. and Mrs. AV. H. Rose, of Oainaru; and Mr. C. F. Todhunter, of Christchurcft.
Sir Chas. Bowen, M.L.C., is a. passenger by the Mararoa, which will arrive from the south this morning.

Dr. AYilson, of AVanganui, and Colonel Bailey, of Timaru, were passengers from Sydney by-tlie Marama yesterday.
Mr. Noel Barraud, of Palmerston North, who lias .been on a painting tour In Europe, returned to Wellington the Marama yesterday. "While absent irom the Dominion he has painted in Canada, England, Inlanders, Germany, Bavaria, Switzerland, and Home.
Councillor C. W. Poynter, chairman of the "Waneanui Tramways Committee, and Mr. P. P. Talboys, tramway engineer, have been appointed to represent Wanganui at the Tramway Conference organised by tho "Wellington City Council for Dcccmber 8.
The Wanganui Borough Council has passed a resolution placing on record its appreciation of tlio services of. tho late borough engineer (Mr. A. Russell) and sorrow at his death.
Mr. Philip Best was yesterday reelected chairman of the "Waimea County Council (savs a Press Association message from Nelson). He has held the position for several years.
At a meeting of the Canterbury Carpenters' and Joiners' Union, held last night, it was resolved to nominate Mr. H. R. Eushbridge for the position of actingworkers' representative on the Arbitration Court.—Press Association. '
