'.- '.-.-' The Wellington Meat Export Company, Ltd., have opened permanent offices in Masterton.: . _ : , ■ -.-.-. A flaxmill is .at present in work on the Opaki. Stock is reported to be going lack, and if is feared that there will be sncli a scarcity of grass that much of it will require to bo transferred to more favoured districts. ; The heat experienced during the past two days; has been very marked, Yes'terday the thermometer registered as high as'Bo degrees in the. shade, and today it is also very hot. ■-.'■' At a meeting or "the Management Com.inittee of-the Wairarapa Cricket Association on Saturday: it was decided to enter the Wairarapa senior representatives for the Lord; Hawke Cup.. .. ■ ' ■ A miniature rifle range is at present in course of erection at the Masterton 'District High. School! In the senior' cricket matches on Sat■•nrday, South Wairarapa scored 190 in tWir first .innings against Carl ton, and C&rlton made '68 for the loss of nine wickets. The Masterton senior: team : journeyed to Carterton. The latter club, in'their first innings, made 61, and Mas-, terton replied with 133. In their second .innings Carterton havo lost one-wicket for nine runs. In the: junior division, St. Matthew's; B defeated Opaki by an innings .'and 58 runs. St. Matthew's , A commenced a match with.Masterton. The latter scored 70 in thoir first innings,, end the former .were disposed of lor 47, A meeting of directors of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society was held' on Saturday last, when Messrs. J.' B. M'Kenzie and W. Sollar were appointed gates tothe Wairarapa Association. Five new. members, were' elected, and officials were appointed for the New Tear's Day sports. Mr. Ulic Shannon, of Wellington, was reappointed handicapper for the .running events. It was. decided to register the association under the Unclassified Societies. Act. The funeral of tho late Mr; Law AtMnson took place at tho Masterton Cemetery yesterday afternoon. At a meeting of the sub-committee of ' 'the'Masterton A., and.P. Associatibn. on Saturday! a; list of judges for the next Bhow.was drawn up.. .-'■■- An accident occurred' in Queen Street on Saturday . afternoon. Mr. Thomas .Cooper, fanner, of Te Ore Ore, was crossing the 6treet, when •he was knocked down by a cyclist, and .sustained a fracturo of the nose" and other-injuries. A number of farmers round Masterton are feeding off their stunted cereal crops with grass. Others intend converting them into chaff. •'■■-:. A heavy thunderstorm passed over Masterton-. and district yesterday afternoon, and, besidee clearing .the atmosphore, had a .refreshing effect upon vepretation. : The contractor for the construction' of the bridges over tho Waipoua Eiver at the northern, approaches has abandoned his contract. The matter will-'bo con#idercd at a meeting- of the Masterton County Council to-day.
