SHAKESPEARE READING COMPETITION.
0- -■' ■'' " The Wellington Shakespeare Club's annual reading competition for pupils of secondary schools was held on Saturday morning at the Technical School, ami was attended by representatives of thtf followin" schools :-Girls' College, Mrs. Henry Smith's, Mrs. Evans's, Miss Butt's \Vellin"ton College, Normal School, and ivewtowii District High School. The contest was a close one, very few marks separating anv of the competitors, and the judges, tiiss England, Miss Holmes, and J[r. C. AV. Tanner, speak in high terms of tho general excellence of the work done; a distinct advance being noticeable over previous years in interpretation, pronunciation, and enunciation. The tests consisted of a prepared reading, and a passage to be read at sight; tho prepared work, especially, resulting in a very creditable display oil the part of the candidates. Tho names of the competitors and their respective positions are as follow:—Girls — Rita Gilbert, 82 marks; Hairs Hall, 77; Janet Anderson, 7G; Jean Mackenzie, 75; Gwendoline Shephard, 74- Vita. Spearman, 72; Jean Maimeson, 69; Eila Hill, 68; Marie Caterer, 66; Myrtle Jones, 62. Boys-A. F. Winks, 85; E. E. liislnvorth, 82; C. B. Holmes,. 81; Gerald Eagar, 70; Peter Mudie, 68. Tho leading boy and leading girl are each entitled to a prize of the value of i>l Is. in books. . i
