ALLEGED ENCROACHMENTS ON QUEEN STREET, AUCKLAND, ;By Tcleerapli.-Special Correspondent.) Auckland, November-18. An important statement in regard to an alleged inaccuracy', in the alignment, of a considerable portion of the busiest part of Queen .Street was made at the meeting of the City Council last night, in connection with a discussion regarding the plans pf the. new buildings for Messrs. Smeeton and Co. Tho Mayor (Mr. L. J. Bagnall) remarked that according to the report of tho Government surveyor (Mr. Langmuir), which had been forwarded to the council, all tho buildings on the west side of Queen Street, from Custom Street to Swanson Street, encroached on the ; streetline.- The enroachment, according to the Government surveyor, was no lessthan eight foefc at Messrs. Smeeton's premises, -where rebuilding operations aro to bo commenced early next year. The Mayor said the matter was now being investigated by tho Works Com-, mittee, according to tho plan furnished •by Mr. Langmuir. The greatest en-: croachmcnt is at the Waitcmata Hotel site, it being-.there no less than ten. feet, and it gradually narrows down,, being eight feet at Messrs. Smeeton's; premises and about a foot o.t the north side of Swanson Street, and above Swanson Street the encroachment is only a matter of inches, running out to nothing at about Messrs. Millie and Chovsc's promises. Tho Works Committee is now collecting information with a view, if the evidence is. sufficient, of obtaining a definito legal judgment noon tho matter.
