The president of'the' society is Lord Ashbourne, and tho vice-presi-dents include many distinguished personages in Ireland. ', Mr. J. A; Young, Mayor of Hamilton, is in town on business connected with'the affairs of that borough. Mr. Geo. W, Adair, late boys' work director' of ' the Wellington Y.M.C.A., has been appointed hon. secretary of the Auckland Y.M.C.A. Boys' Department. . Mr. W. Pryor, secretary of'the New Zealand Employers' Federation, instructed by tho Parliamentary Committee of the federation, has written to the Hon. R. M'Kenzie, Minister for Public Works, stating that the federation is strongly opposed to'.tta inclusion o5 any provi- 1 sioiis for the sotting up of Appeal Boards in the Tramway Bill. Tho fed- 1 eration has previously informed the I Minister of the reasons for its opposition, and -.t' now states that the proposal to appoint stipendiary magistrates as chairmen still further strengthens the objections held. Mr. Stephen Jacka, a resident :of Wellington for over fifty years, died at his residence, Hanover Street, Wadestoivn, on Thursday afternoon. He-was sitting in a chair when he suddenly' fell forward and expired. The deceased, .who was 83 years of ago, was born iu Cornwall. He,was a builder by trade,' and for years conducted a business in Courtenay Place. His wife died about two years ago, leaving a family of threo sons (Messrs. Arthur aud Harry Jacka, of Wellington, aud Mr. Thomas Jacka, of Auckland), and two daushters (Mesdamos Judd and Kow). The late Mr. Jacka was ono of the earliest niombers of the City Council. • Mr., CalJaghan, of the Tfmaru Post Office staff, is spending a . holiday in Wellington. . ' Mr. S. J. Flewellyn, proprietor of the Royal Hotel, Auckland, is a visitor to Wellington. Mr. A. F. York, of Lower Hutt, late of Messrs. Barraud, York and Co., lias been appointed auctioneer to the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Distributing Co., Ltd. Mr. Law Atkinson, an old resident of Newman, Forty Mile Bush, but who has resided in Mastcrton for. two or threo years, died yesterday afternoon (says our local correspondent), at the ago of sovcnty-onc. .Deceased was a nativo of Leeds, Yorkshire,, and came to the Dominion in 1888. Ho leaves a family of two sons and ono daughter.
