SLAUGHTERING AND INSPECTION.

AN AMENDING BILL Under the Slaughtering and Inspection Bill, which was circulated in, Parliament .yesterday,, where on the slaughter of stock for human consumption it is found that the stock is diseased, ■ tho owner shall be entitled to compensation as follows:— .Heifers and bullocks not exceeding eight years of age, and of not. less value than ,£3 per head, and lambs and ■ sheep (other than rams) not exceeding five years of ago, a,nd of not less value than 10s. per head—one. penny per pouud weight of meat condemned, not including the head or any part of the animal below the knee or hock. Swine:"Twopence per pound dressed weight. '■ ■ Cows not exceeding ten years of age and of not less value than £3 per head —threo farthings per pound dressed weight. Calves of not less' than GOlb. dressed weight—three farthings per pound dressed weight of meat condemned, not including the head or any part of thu animal ' below the knee or hock. The compensation shall not be . payable. —(1) unless the owner makes application to-the inspector (a) in the case of'any abattoir or meat export slaughter-house .within.,the first ten days of the .month following that in which the stock.-was slaughtered, or (b) in all other cases within threo days after the stock- was slaughtered; nor unless tho owner satisfies the-inspector that: the stock so slaughtered was in fact diseased, and lias been disposed of as required by the Act; nor in any case where the meat was rendered unfit.for human consumption through defect oi-inferiority, in its condition. The controlling authority of an abattoir may make by-laws, not inconsistent with the Act or with regulations;made thereunder—(a) Prescribing the charges payable for the use of the abattoir, the housing and feeding of stock before slaughter, and the slaughtering and dressing of stock; and (b) regulating tlie working; and management of the abattoir. So long as any by-law is, in force prescribing tho charges in respect of any abattoir, no 'greater or ' other charges shall be payable than those' specified in the by-law. ■ , - . "Meat-export slaughterhouse"- means a slaughterhouse wherein not less than twenty-five per. centum of the stock slaughtered - is for. export beyond New Zealand, and meat inspected by a speoial inspector may be- exported beyond New Zealand, but during the currency of the inspector's appointment no meat shall be moved from the slaughtering-place for ;human consumption or for export unless 'and until the inspector declares it to be free from disease.
