"THE SECRET OF HAPPINESS."
Mr. .J. H, Thomson, Section Organiser to the Now Zealand Scction of the Tlicosoplncal Society, gave a public address on the "Secret of Happiness" at the rooms of the local society. Mr. Thomson divided his subject under three heads:—Man's physical, moral, and mental well-being, lie dealt at some length with the crying vice of our civilisation, with its lack of chastity, and advised the practice of the virtues including patriotism. In tlio course of tho questions, patriotism was defined as defence, not defiance. The builders of a higher civilisation must defend it against the onslaught of less advanced races. Man's relation to his surroundings was then treated, the attitildo of helpfulness in all departments being urged. In conclusion Jlr. Thomson defined the "Secret of Happiness" as "tho wiso regulation of every department of our nature." The treatment of slumdwellers was spoken of by several questioners and the lecturer said that the neglect, of slum-dwellers—tho undeveloped egos of our a social sin, hut it must bo remembered that national sins aro tho aggregate of individual sins. If wo can try to do our individual duty we shall build a virtuous.and .well-regulated .nation. 1
