A serious position has "arisen in regard to tho 3'laitai Valley and access to the river banks, which people liav.o enjoyed since Nelson was. founded. The legatees'of tho Richardson Estate/who bold an old grant of practically tlie whole valley, 'intend fencing off the wholo length of "tho road, , except where tho road crosses tho river, .which the County Council will not' permit. Tho result is that picnic, camping, and fishing resorts used by thousands every holiday will bo practically closed to tho public. The City Council "has adopted 'a resolution asking tho Hon. R. M'Kenzio and Mr. Graham, to indiico tho Government to .either resume tho Richardson Estate for closer settlement, with a chain reservation on each bank of the river, and .to have tho river itself declared a. piibliir recreation .reserve, or acquire tlio whole area as a scenic reserve.
