THE COMING THING.

..—— — 0 . . ACCUMULATORS FOR TRAMCARg. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.! ' Auckland, November 15. In view of the possibility of the Edison battery being adopted on tramway' systems in New Zealand, ■it is interesting to hear of' the progress of tho new battery, which,- according to Mr. G. Winstone, who .ha's just returned' to Auckland from a visit to New York, has passed its experimental stage. In tho course of conversation with an interviewer, Mr.- Winstone said that, while in New York, ho had interested . himself in the matter, and paid a visit' to the Edison' factory, where he met Mr. Edison. Talking with the inventor/ he learned that, after many years' work and the expenditure of much money, Mr. Edison'believed .that he had brought the system to a successful issue. One' of tho chief difficulties to overcome was tho construction of a car which,' while light in weight, would embody the, requisite power, and ho had now succeeded in bringing about a suitable combination. The first experiment with the battery in New York was. made by placing the batteries in two horse tramcars in the city. The result was most satisfactory, and. it was immediately decided to replace tho whole horse tramway system with cars installed,/with' Edison batteries. ■ •: ' "Another direction in which the-bat-tery was used," remarked Mr. Winstone, "was, the substitution of battery-loaded wagons for horse-drawn vehicles for the purpose of carrying merchandise.. Though this was an improvement',' Mr. Winstone did not think the ■ innovation . was sufficiently advanced to warrant it being introduced by carriers in- 'Auckland. • ~.-. .Mr. Winstone concluded: incni-s are being watched with ; -great interest in New York, and I am' convinced that the battery is • the coming thing." Tho question of installing the Edison batterv«system on tramcavs is occupy- ' ing the attention of the Mount Roslcill Road Board, which controls a large suburban area fronting tho Manukau Harbour. .--• - i
