"AN INJUSTICE."
PROTEST AGAINST EDUCATION ; RESERVES; BILL. '■■ (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) , Dunsdin, November 15. '•Certain' proposals . in. the..Education"' Reserves Bill are regarded . by' the public bodies of Otago and Southland as inequitable, and a meeting of gentle- . men representing civic and educational institutions was held .this morning to arrange proceedings of protest. . The injustice to Otago and Southland consists (it was remarked) in proposals to., vest in the Crown not only the reserves and endowments of the School Commissioners, but also the sum of £30,000 accumulated in many years from those. reserves and used by the commissioners in -the interests of education in Otago arid Southland. These- accumulated funds,_ the meeting held, shouldbe secured, if possible; in the interests of the University, Technical School, the Art Schools, and the Otago. High Schools, all of which are greatly hampered for want of funds. Tho meeting referred the matter, to- a committee ■'■ consisting of the Hon. T. Fergus and Messrs. W. Scott, T. Scott, H, Breen, and W. R. Bugh to take such steps as might bo considered desirable, and after consideration the committee dispatched a telegram to Mr. James Allen, ■ M.P;, stating what was desired, and asking him to call a meeting of the Otago and Southland merobers of both Houses to see what could. be done. The meeting gave him an absolutely free hand, .and suggested joint action with the Canterbury members, as.Can. terbury was placed in the same position.
