LUNCHEON ON S.S. MAITAI.
OUR SECOND 'FRISCO SAILING. " The second of the Union Steam Ship Company's steamers to take up tho running in the hew San Francisco service, the Maitai (formerly the Miowera), was the scene of a pleasant little function, yesterday, when at the invitation of Mr. T. W. Whitson, act-ing-manager in Wellington,, a number of representative shipping and commercial men were entertained at luncheon. Among those were.the Hon. T. Mackenzie, Jwmster for Trade and Commerce; Mr. •J: • H. N. A. Burns, manager. of tho New Zealand Shipping Company; Mr. H. C. Tewsley, chairman of tho Chamber of Commerce; Mr. 'Wallis, manager of the New Zealand and South African Steam-ship-Company;'Mr. R. Renner, manager of the Patea' Shipping Company; Mr. H. Cram.ond, manager* of Thos. Cook and Son; Captain Johnson, Harbourmaster; Mr. W. Flavell, manager of-tho Westport Coal Company; Mr. John Duthic'; Mr. Geo. Sliirtcliffe, manager of A. S. Paterson' and Co.; Mr. C. Turner,' manager of the Blackball Coal .Company; Mr. M'Nicol, of tho Union Company's staff; Dr. Pollen, Port Health Officer; and other representative people, including Captain Stevens, of the Maitai, the officers, and members.of the press. After luncheon the guests were shown over the ship under the guidance of Mr. Whitson and Captain Stevens, and favourable comment was general on tho improvements and comforts' which have been added to the steamer during her recent overhaul.
