Service Guild' 6 olaims,. tho socrotary of the Guild stated that siuce giving his ■ evidence, the lato chief officer of tho steamer Time had his rating reduced and had lost his ship. ■ . ■ The President of the Arbitration Court s.a.id he could not take evidence on the matter. ' . The secretary of the Steamship Owners' Association declared that he was willing that the evidence should be taken so as to have a thorough explanation of the case. Ho also said'that tho association was in favour of_ increments to the masters, but not to officers, because they did not have the same responsibility as the masters. . . '~•'•.
Tho chief officer t>f the steamer Georgic, iu giving evidence as to the difference in the cost of living in Australia and in England, said that as a general thing'a pound would.go as far in England as. thirty shillings in Australia. For a. suit of underclothing costing nine shillings in England, one would probably have to pay sixteen shillings in New Zealand.
