TARATAHI-CARTERTON RACES.
FIRST DAY. RAUPARAHA "WINS 'THE CTJP. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Carterton, November 9. J Although heavy showers fell'at Carterton on Tuesday it was' beautifully fine to-day for the opening day. of the. Tara-tahi-Carterton Racing Club's meeting, and there was a good ■ attendance at the club's course at Clareville. There were not, however, so many visitors from Wellington as in previous years, partly on account of the fact that the holiday was not general, and partly because the train arrangements are inconvenient. The track was in capital order and interesting racing took place.- Kauparaha, a member of F. Porter's Hutt team, won the "IVairarapa County Cup after a very pretty race, and the Hack Guineas was annexed by Mr. H. M'Manaway's Rill, who was after--wards decorated on the lawn. Speculation on the totalisator was fairly brisk, and the figures for the • day amounted to .£4035 10s., as .against for the first, day last year. Eight'"bookmakers were licensed, their fees amounting to .£ll4. The following are the results:—'

GLADSTONE HACK WELTER, of 70 sovs. Seven furlongs.-.-8 Mr. A. Wilkin's b. m. Kilsyth, , by San Remo—Opaque, ■4yrs., Bst. 41b. (F. Porter), 1; 4 Mr. J, Sullivan's Contour, Bst. 81b. Pritchard\ 2; 1 Mr. J.' M'Hardy's Eiya,. Bst. 51b, (Ayre), 3. Also started; 5 Rose Herald, Bst. 71b. (Watson); 7 Bereola.'gst. 71b (Telford); G Epsom Downs, '■ Bst. 61b.'(Reid) » l 3 Vite, Bst. 51b. (Hatch);.2-Floater, Bst. (Lambess); and 9 Luviller, Bst. (Kirk). • Kilsyth led practically the whole way, and won by three-parts of a length from' Contour, who was a neck in front of' ■Eiya. Vite was close up, fourth. Time, lmin. 32seo. ■■■ ,'. . . NOTES ON THE RACING. - j Backers, commenced the . day -well by selecting Whakayeira as favourite for the Hurdles. The San Fran gelding was a class above the other three .candidates, and he must have won with fully a stoni in hand. ■ , -..>'. '.
In the Belvedere Hack Handicap Lord Possible was a better favourite 'than Merrie Frank,, .but the latter,: who was ridden by Hatch, commenced smartly, and never. gave anything ■■ else a chance.. Considering the winner's good, form al Trentham last .month, when he ran second to Dearest, it was surprising that he was not favourite,' but Lord Possible came with a big reputation, and might have got closer to the winner but for being badly cut on the fetlock ;during the running of the race.
The seven acceptors' all. went to the post for the Railway Handicap, and Sunbonnet, • with Hatch up, ; was made the biggest favourite of tne day. The issue was never in doubt, for, Hatch .anticipated the starter, . and his mount led all the way. Thetis, the second favourite, was left, several lengths,, bud in any circumstances would not have troubled the winner. Purakau. and Merchantman, who were comparatively neglected on the machine, both shaped, very well. . ...
■ Only three horses went to the post for the Wairarapa Hack Guineas, and. as this event has never! attracted very. many starters it. will not in future figure on the club's programme.' Rill was the favourite, and she won right enough; but she had. to be kept going the whole way to stall off British Maid, who wai never more than half a length away, After, the race Bill was led on to the lawn and decorated with the blue ribbon, cheers being given for the filly and her owner.
A good field of eleven contested the ; Cup race. Vi 'and Penza made the pace very, fast, and it looked at. one stage, as'if they would not be.-.headed, but at. the home bend they ran wide, and Rauparaha, who was then in a handv position, ran through on the rails ami .won easily. ...The. winner, is:an Aucklandbred horse, and is now trained "at tie Hufct.. He showed . good form. at the, Masterton' meeting, and his win was not' unexpected by his party. F. PoTter, wh« trains the horse, also rode him, and he had the. good fortune to ride another of his team to victory in the last race of the day. |: ' \
Hatch rode his third winner in the Maungaraki Hack, Handicap, when he got First Consul home by a h«ad. The winner was favourite, but he caused hig backers some little anxiety,.for,Embrocation- hud a bis break on , the field at one stage, and- First' Consul only got on terms with her about 50 yards from- the post. .......
No few«r than 16 starters contested the Trial Plate, which . was won by Portcullis. The 'winner was not favourite, but was undoubtedly the best-conditioned horse in the. field. Ebonite was again unlucky, for he (rot away badly, and could only-finish third. Royal Knight, Ahuapai, Merry Widow, and All Gold each showed pace.
Eiya was a pronounced favourite ill the last event, but never- looked like winning. Kilsyth, a full-sister to Auldearn, had the race, won at any stage, but appeared to be all out at the finish to bsat Contour.' The winner paid the biggest dividend of the day.
