Tho Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan meeting was continued to-day in beautiful weather, and the attendance was again good. It included the viceregal party. The racing was very interesting, and Diabolo's win in the Canterbury Cup was very popular. There was some bumping in this event, and the stewards, alter inquiry, severely cautioned Jenkins, rider of the winner, for careless riding. The day's enjoyment was marred by an accident in the Otaio Plate, in which event Culliuan fell, bringing down in turn The Lark, Martist, and Bollin. W. Young, rider of The Lark, escaped with a few scratches, but L. Wilson, rider of Cullinan, had his leg broken. C. Jenkins, rider of Martist, received a very severo flesh wound in the thigh, and F. D. Jones, rider of Bollin, had his collarbone dislocated. -Martist was so severely injured that he had to be destroyed, but the other horses were not seriously hurt. Splendid summer weather was experienced for the "Oaks Day" at -Eiccarton. Th e racing was highiy interesting, but the serious accident which occurred in the Otaio Plate marred the engagement for the rest of the day. Tho stewards met after the Canterbury Cup, and cautioned C. Jenkins for crossing Outlander foing oat of the straight the first time. [. Price, rider of San Severo, was also cautioned for crossing the field in the Avon "Welter event.
The Hurdles was again a "turn up" for the ring, and the victory of Master Paul was quite unlooked for, though he is known to be very smart over a 6hort course. Stayboy, who was making his farst appearance at the meeting, was favourite, but Master Paul always had him extended, and, over the last furlong, he dropped to a walk. Aorangi ran a good, honest race, but was greatly hampered over the last bit by Milo, who bored in on him. . Beckwell fell at the hurdle at the back of the course. The Spring Nursery Handicap was a very interesting race, and resulted in a good finish between Miscount and Masterpiece, with Orton two lengths away. Miscount and Dirge were first away, but the latter faded out at the finish. Masterpiece joined Miscount at the distance, and the two were hard at it passing the post, the big Chokebore colt "winning by a h<ad. - . ' The Avon Welter Handicap was ' a keenly-contested race, and the field was bunched for the greater part of the way. San Severo led across the bottom, but several were, within striking distance, and were only awaiting the straight entrance before putting in their runs. Down the running the colours of Dreadless were
most prominent, and then came Merrivonia on the rails, Genius, Medallist, and Domino. The Karamu mare was tirin» at the finish, but lasted well enough to win by a length. Domino was a neck in front of Merrivonia,' while Genius, Medallist, and Guianforte finished in that order. The Canterbury Clip resulted in a popular victory for Diabolo, who was favourite. At the start Outlander led at a slow pace. Passing the stand, Jenkins tried for his usual break, but Outlander went with him. Going out of the' straight Diabolo lashed out and tried to kick Outlander, which had the effect of stopping the latter for a bit, and John ran into the lead with Diabolo. while Ingoda also moved up. Birkdale up to this stage- had kept well in the rear, but with six furlongs to go ho was moved up, and, across the bottom , the field was bunched with Diabolo and John still in
the van. At the turn for home Ingoda challenged the'leaders, but soon fell away agaih, and Birkdale swept up on the outside. John, Diabolo, and the colt were all in a line at the distance, but the_ black horso stayed the Wt; and, amidst applause, won by two lengths. S>everci! private watches made the time better than the official return ,by a second.
The big mile event attracted eight runners, and the money went on Los Angeles as if he only had to start to win. Hβ looked very well, and so did Madam Madcap. The favourite, however, was badly left, and, with Kohinomy he gave Forinby and the rest of tlie field a bjg break. The Karamu colt made the pace very fast to the home turn, where Madam Madcap, who had been lying handy with Polymorphous, came up. A good race between these two saw Madam Madcap beat her rival by a length. Sandstrpajn was half a length off, and a head in front of Wimniera. Los Angeles ran through in the straight, but died away at the finish. He was most unlucky, and had it not been for being left he must have won.
Scratohings reduced the Oaks field to 'our runners, and Countermine was made
favourite. : At the start Humming Bird dashed off, and led past Cutts's, with Countermine, Martine, and Lady Reina ■in that order. Down the back the first two were together, and the other pair three lengths behind. . The quartet was bunched at the half-mile, ami then Martine took command. She led into the straight, and won comfortably from Lady Reina, with the other pair a long way behind.
There was a serious accident in tlie Otaio Mace, with the result that Jen-
kins, rider of Martist, Wilson (Cullinan), and Jones.(Bollin) were injured., Coroniform was backed doiyji to a short price, and Martist was second favourite. From a good start Cullinan and Mumuraled out of the straight, with Adage and Martist next, and the favourite last. Muniura led passing the mile post, and then the accident happened. From the stand it appeared as if Adage got on to Mumura's heels, and Cullinan got on top of him, and then the horses came down in quick succession. Martist, Bollin, and The Lark all were on the ground in a heap. Rose Noble and Coroniform had to fly the fallen horses, and, after this, the latter went on and won easily from idage, with Rose Noble finishing fast. Jenkins, rider- of Martist. was thrown, several feet in the air and landed on a broken post, which badly lacerated his leg. Martist had to be shot. L. Wilson had his leg broken, and F. D. Jones his collarbone broken. W. Young, rider of The Lark, escaped with a cut face. An inquiry will be helil by the stewards into the causo of the accident. The Stead bracket, Culprit and Sunburnt, saw a very short price in the Electric Plate. The Ho-y-ear-old acted up to her reputation, and, getting well away, won very easily. WEIGHTS FOE -FOURTH DAY.
