[By Glencoe.] ■ ■ There will be racing to-day at Ellerslie, Riccarton, Waverley, Waipawa, and Carterton. I Local racegoers will probably attend lin largo numbers at the Taratahi-Car-terton Racing Club's meeting where' the principal events to be decided are tho Wairarapa County Cup and the Wairarapa Hack Guineas. In the former race twelve horses have made tho acceptance, and a good race should result.
The Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting will be advanced another stage today. The ' fields show a considerable reduction, this being- duo to tho fact that tho hard going has knocked out quite a large number of horses. Stayboy, who has lately been showing good form in tho south, is a fresh horso in the hurdle race. Several new two-year olds are engaged in tho Spring Nursery event, these including the Poriruatrained Dirge, who has the reputation of being. very, smart. The, Chokobore gelding Sharpshooter, who is engaged in the Avoii Welter Handicap:'at. Riccarton to-day,, won this race last year. 'Jockeys S.Rcid, T. Pritchard, and T. O'Brien are arriving -from the south this morning, and will be riding at Clareville.' :' Diabolo, who ran such a. sterling race in . the New Zealand Cup, is engaged in tho Canterbury Cup to-day, when he will meet nothing equal to' Bridge, who defeated him last week,
Los Angeles will probably start a very warm favourite in the Jockey Club Handicap at Riccarton to-day in which event.hewill meet a poor field. However, it will bo noticed that he has 161b. more on his back to-day than, ho had in the Cup, and, as some of the light-weights will- be with:-him in tho earl 'ystages of the race|. it is quite, on- tho cards that he will beat, himself in endeavouring to shake them off. .
At the. sale of Mr'. J. F. Buchanan's yearlings at Christehurch yesterday the I.Palmerston North owner,. Mr. Highden, purchased the brown .filly-by Martian from Cuiralba for 140gns. This was tho only lot sold. In company with his trainer, G. Price, the same owner afterwards looked . over tho Charlemagne yearlings. ■ Paul (St. Paul—Motto) competed in the Maiden Hurdles at Ellerslie on Saturday, and was then shipped back to New Plymouth. - He will probably start in the., hurdle race .at Waverley to-day.
In 'the Dannovirke acceptances' previously published, Claremont, 9st. 71b., was omitted from tho Hurdles, and Hinekorangi, Bst. 131b., from tho Tiratu Dash.—Press-Association.
According to.an account of the Melbourne Cup race, Trafalgar was particularly unfortunate during the running as ho received "a couple of bumps at a critical stage, and this sent him from fourth place right back into the ruck. Considering that he was carrying 9st. 21b. his magnificent -finish, after receiving these bumps, proves him; to be one of : the gamest horses racing in Australia. ' •'"'■'• v ■■■■''■
Lady. Magneto," a black mare, . by Mernwee, from New..Zealand, has-.join-ed S. P. Casey's string, -at Moor'efi'eld' (says, tho Sydney "Referee"). The trainer named will also take . charge shortly., of- Mr. ..aiiddle'ton... Melrose's horses, including Advantage and Truganini..
Two' of the candidates which will be racing at _ Ellerslie to-day are progeny of Castorlino (dam of Soultline). They are Maxwell and Jena. . Although North East.is not-engaged in the King Edward Memorial Handicap at Jlllerslie to-day, there are several well-performed horses in the field, these including Sedition,. Advocate, Uhlando, Uranium, Paisano, Waimangu, and irarable. .
Big fields are engaged in all the events at Waverley to-day, and the club should have a very successful meeting. The Cup candiSates include: l,¥l 6 «?*s• Notorious, Valentine, Mallet, bt. Lumsden, and Attention.
_ After Black Northern had won the Maiden Hurdles at Ellerslie on Saturu'Yi' «• ,T as Purchased by Mr. Archib.alV a ,' who was aotin S for a T len ,,.„. Blac k Northern is to remain in J. Williamson's stable.
• Fjrst Consul, who won the last event on tfie_ first day of the Masterton meeting, is; engaged in tho. Maungaraki Handicap at Carterton to-day.
_. Mr. James : Rowe, an American racing man, who for many years was very successful as tho trainer of Mr. J. R Keene's horses, is going to England to tram for Mr. Herman B. Duryea. During forty years connection 'with the turf, Mr. Rowe has compiled a large fortune, and is now in the sport purely for the love of it. Ho holds the unique distinction of having trained horses that have won a total of 3,000,000. dollars, and, in one year, he won as much as 420,000 dollars. '
;,; As soon as tho Maiden Hurdle Race at Ellerslie was over on Saturday, tho club's look-out steward reported unfavourably on the performance of the favourite, Continuance, but (says the "Herald") the stewards, after hearing .what tho connections, of the horse had to say, accepted the explanation offered. The stewards again met at the conclusion of The City Handicap to inquire into the falling of Parable during ihe race. The evidence elicited the fact that there was some bumping near to the point where Parable came down. The latter struck Sea Elf, and, in explaining this, C., Brown; the rider of Parable, stated that his horse received a bump from another of the contest- ( ants, and this forced him over on,to Sea Elf. The stewards, after hearing the evidence, _ came to the conclusion that the affair was the result of an accident, but they deemed it necessary to administer a caution to Brown.
