On Friday last there died suddenly at his homo in the Rai, Mr. Robert Forrest, aged 58. He was born at Carluko, in Scotland, and for the past forty-six : years had resided mostly in Marlborough. In the earlier days ho managed a sawmill for his uncle, Mr. Wm. Brownlee. After clearing Mahakipawa, he went to Nydia Bay, in the Pelorus Sounds and then to Kaiuma, close- by, until ho purchased his recent holding in the Rai. On Sunday ho was buried in tho cemetery at Havelock, and, in accordance with his oftenexpressed wishes, the ceremonies wore
purely of a secular character. There was ono 'of the largest attendances ever seen in Havelock at the graveside. A secular address, after tha model of Mr. Austin.Holyoake, was delivered by Mr. E. Powell, and tho proceedings were brought t oa closo by Mr. Matthews, who recited tho burial service of tho Foresters, to whiei society the deceased had for many years belonged. Tho largo attendance at the funeral indicated tho respect in which tho deceased was held, and tho floral tributes were numerous.
