KARORI AFFAIRS.
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Karon' Borough Council was held last evening, there being present: The Mayor (Air. C. I. Dasent), and Councillors Spiers, Cathie, Wedde, llaine, Burn, Welling, Hildreth, and Warmsloy. >■ A letter was received from the committee of the Napier Chamber of Commerce, asking for the council's support of a movement—in connection with tho Government's Aid to Water Power Works Bill—for tho obtaining .of one comprehensive -scheme for., the whole district extending .between Gisborne, Wellington, aiul.Wanganui. Tho natural resources, for. such a„scheme, of Lako Haikare -Moana, with an area ,- df ~six' square miles, a maximum depth of 800 ft., and a fall of 1420 ft. in 3i miles, were, it was claimed,, such as to commend itself for the purpose. On a rough estimate its "potential" was set down at 134,000 horse-power, and this reserve, the letter stated, offered a comprehensive scheme at a smaller cost to each district than would bo incurred by a number of minor schemes. The Mayor remarked that tho Government's scheme, as everybody probably realised, was going to cost an enormous sum of money, but they would no doubt live to see tho day when current would be procurable at cheap rates, available for tho development of the country's and local bodies' enterprises. Ho "moved, and it was resolved, that the committee of tho chamber be assured of the council's desire to assist in any way possible to forward the accomplishment, of a coniprehensivo scheme. . Permission'was granted the local Athletic Club to hold a sports meeting on the recreation ground on, November 23. ■Further business transacted' was of routine nature.
