CANTERBURY GRAIN MARKET

(By Tclesraph.—Press Association.! Chrlstchurchi November 8. Carnival Week being in full swing, and holiday-making and business being somewhat incompatible, but little business is recorded during the past two or three days in grain 'and other produce. The wheat market appears' to be inclined to be unsettled, contradictory reports being prevalent., The alleged absence of spaco for _ shipment is said to bo making prices easier, whilst, according to other views, the continuous dry weather and the consequent probable decreased yield is having,, or will shortly have, the offect of inclining prices to harden. On the one hand t it is asserted that only millers are operating at present, and are not offering more than 35., whilst on the other hand purchases at 3s. to 3s. 3d. of F.A.Q. for shipment to the United Kingdom are reported. It seems fairly well established that just at present local millers . are buying at lesser prices than those which were paid during the past fortnight. Pearl is reported to be worth 3s. 6d., but there is none offering. Damaged wheat (fowl wheat) is worth from 2s. 7d. to 2s. Bd. Tho continued drought, short supplies, and the prospect of a decreased yield, have •had tho effect of oats becoming firmer. Difficulty is being experienced, according to some reports, in getting supplies, and consequently values have appreciated. For duns, A and B grades. Is. lOd. to Is. lid. has been.given; good heavy coloured duns. Is. lid. to 25.; and lighter sorts, Is. 6d. to Is. Bd. Danish are quoted at Is. Bd. to Is. 9d„ and gartons are worth Is. 9d. For old potatoes there is practically no demand, and they are to all intents and purposes off the market. Local new potatoes are not expected to be ready in any quantity for shipment for six :or eight weeks. In the meantime new- potatoes from the North Island are being retailed at 3d. per lb. Oats—Sheaf chaff is in short supply, and what is offering is fetching from 70s. to 755. , Peas are off the market at present, and there are practically none obtainable.
