OPENINC SALE AT TOWN HALL. INCREASED NUMBER OF BUYERS. DECLINE. IN VALUES. Tho opening wool sales for the Eeason 1910-11 were, held in . the Town Hall yesterday, and the nature of the transactions are sufficiently indicated by tho reports of the associated brokers. They are as follow:— • Dalgety and Co. Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Ltd report a total of 1295 bales was offered, out St, ? , mil 0 contributed a catalogue of 400 bales. The wholo of our catalogue was sold under the hammer, with the exception of 67 bales. There was an increased number of buyers present, representing English, Continental, American and colonial firms, and competition was animated throughout the sale. The wool in most cases opened up clean and bright, though it was much heavier in condition as compared with the first .sale of last year.' Prices for ileeco wools, as compared with Jiovember sale last yoar, showed a decline of Id to 2d. per lb., with the exception of .bellies and pieces, which were on aPH k*V"-';~! t';»n. ruling. The New Zealand Loan nntl Mercantile Agency ..Co., Ltd.,. renort:-Our. quota was 248 bales offered, and 220 sold under the hammer. Owing to the wet weather, experienced during the past few weeks, and to the catalogues closine four days earlier than last year,: the . quantity offered was less 'than half what was catalogued for the first sale last season. The presem, offerinE more condition, and was not so well grown as that of last year's, lliere was an unusually large attendance of buyers for an opening sale, and biddin? was keen, arid -at times exciting. a« anticipated, fine wools and superior crossbreds were lower by ljd. to 2d. per lb,, as compared with last November sale. On the other hand. coarEe and medium crossbred; and skirtings, were about" on a level with the corresponding pale of last year. There was splendid competition for skirtings between local mills and buyers on French account. Abraham and Williams. Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd.. report:—Woolbuying houses at Home and on the Continent were well represented. American, buyers were also represented, but very little wool was available for thoir competition; There was a strong demand for all. wools, and wo estimate that wool suitable for the Bradford section of the trade realised prices on a par with the corresponding sale of last year. Bellies and pieces also sold well. Small catalogues - were offered, there being, only about 1200 bales in all. The wool opened up only in fair, condition, a good proportion being badly grown and tender, and. for this timo of year, carried a lot of urease. Some of our sales were as follow:—YT, bright crossbred, 95d.; coarse
crossbred, 83d.: pieces. 6d. to 6}d.; C and G/W, tine crossbred (tender), 9d.; coarse hoggets, Bjd.; coarse ewes, BJd.; pieces 53d.; JII coni., hoggets. 9Jd.; coarse owes' B}d.; NK over NK, fine crossbred mixed, 91(1-: JK over S, Shropshire, 10} d.; APO. scoured Lincoln, lid.; JK and 8 over MOMOHAKI, coarse crossbred, 81d. to 83d • TAITIMU, fine log-stained. 83d. " Levin and Go, Messrs. Levin and Co., Limited, report— Our ofTering was 322 bales. Tho offering was small as compared with previous years, owing to the sale date being earlier than usual. The condition of the clips was somewhat disappointing, the wool being neither as light, bright, or as sound in staple as last year. There was an unusually large attendance of buyers, representing English, European, American and New Zealand operators Taking quality into consideration, prices opened at last November rates. The choice lines of last year were not offering, nor were buyers apparently inclined to repeat the cxtremo prices paid them for such lots, even if the woo! had been available. American - operators were present looking for bright, well-skirted, and .classed lots, and had to go away disappointed. For tho bulk of the medium and coarso crossbreds, and also for boH'es and pieces, there was strong competition and growers must be pleased to And the season opening on a par with Jast year Vc .npTjed the market with twelve bales halfbred from Marlborough at 113 d., and sold five bales of the same clip at lid., and three bales of Southdown from Ecatherston at lid. Ud.: HB KETU halfbred, 103 d. and Ud. Murray, Roberts and Co. Messrs. Murray Roberts and Co., Ltd.. report:—A small catalogue of some 13C0 bales was offered to an attendance of buyers more numerous than at any previous open;sf sale. Representatives from .Yorkshire. America, France. Germany, aud elsewhere occupying the buying benches, with a fair proportion of New Zealand woollen manufacturing companies, buyers, and local operators. The opening of the sale was eagerly awaited by a largo gathering of tho fnirmin? community, who watched the proceedings with interest. 'rices opened at about the level of last season for the oi-uitiary medium conditioned crossbreds. aud, as was anticipated, the extreme values of last year for the better-conditioned parcels were not forthcoming. It should, however, bo noted that on the averag6 of the wool as shown, tho condition is from 2 to 3 per cent, heavier than last year. ■ Tho halfbred wool catalogued was also a good deal heavier in grease, and this must bo taken into account in estimating values. No merino fleece was catalogued in this sale. What, was probably the best line of Romney crossbred wool in tho sale, was spoilt by the inclusion of tho belly wool, and would, if skirted, have made a much better price. There was a very strong de-
mand for pieces, which sold at relatively much higher prices than fleece lots. Wo obtained up to Bid. for one lot of bulky pieces. Prices ruling in tho sale may bo quoted as below:— Heavy Medium, and Superior, to good, inferior, d. d. d. d. d. d.
