NOTES ON THE RACING. . (By Tdeßraph.-Spocial Correspondent.) •' Christchurch, November 7. The public were at a severe task when they tried to calculate the chances in theHurdles, and the betting was very mixed. Eventually Eeumac and Gold Bird were the best backed. At the start Master Paul pursued his usual forcing tactics, and, jumping beautifully, led over tho first sis furlongs, when he commenced -to tire. Across the bottom tho field was bunched, aud nil except Milo "and Master Paul had winning chances. Xavier :ih r en ran through, but nt the l«|rt fence he was steadied, and Coy and: Gold Bud ran ud to him.- Xavier easily got going again , P and stalled off the cha lengers Coy finished better than Gold Bird, and -beat him. for. second place.
The Criterion Handicap has always been a disastrous race for pun ton, and th s Tear was no exception to the ruie. ine ilWiden bracket-was made a great fayoufitf with backers; but the pair ran in Z Trtar throughout. Gipsy BdU.was first out being joined immediately uy ThLore andl Ais pair making the pace a-cracker," ed the whole way. At the turn Waucnope and Bliss had chances, but the two leaders battled it out in a resolute manner, and the Merriwee horse won by * head. . Wauehope was fourth, Humming Bird fifth, and Bliss sixth.
All the acceptors went to the post-in tho Epsom High-weight and the .unreliable Warsong was made Jayourite, a point shorter than Dearest, with Obsono next in demand. Ascalon and Jlorecambe made the early running, but when half 9 the distance had been covered Obeono took charge, and led to the turn. Here the Porirna pair, which lad begun -adly, put in claims, and in a fast race, Dearest won by a clear margin, with Moreclmbe ■ ust ahead of Obsono, and Swimming Belt next. ' The scratching of Formby, Kilosteri. Vice-Admiral, Jlumura, and Madani Madcap left only four runners in the Derby, and, needless to say, Danube was made the hottest favourite of the meeting. He was in front throughout, and ran the distance in 2min. 38see., which time could have been considerably improved upon. After the race Lady Islington decorated the winner with the blue riband, and congratulated Mr. G. p. Greenwood ■ upon being the possessor of sucn a.good colt, ■ - Sunburnt, who ran in blinkers, brought off a surprise in the Juvenile Plate in which he'led :the whole way. Hatch, on the winner, was very quick off the mark, while Pen-cne and Madam Madcap were elow to move. Peireno was a very pro-, nounced favourite, and her defeat was a sore blow to backers. Cronstadt, who was very sore after his Cup efforts, was the only ■.withdrawal from the Metropolitan Handicap. Bridge, who looked a better horse than ho did in tho Cup, was: mado favourite despite his riso of 171b. It was an exciting race, and run in very fast time. Boutade made ■ tho early running, with John at tho head of the others, and Kopu last, just behind Sandstream and Bridge, but they were all close together. ■ Across the bottoni Jen-, kins took Sandstream up,, but Bridge (Gray).and Kopu (O'Brien) wore blocked. In the straight the two latter put in oreat. runs, but Prim hold them safe,. though Kopu was finishing ' much the stronger, and had he .got-clear earlier he must have iron.
Culprit was the best supported in the Irwcll Handicap, for two-year-olds, and he won all tho way; Query, a , half-sister to Master Alis. Petrovna,..and Tsantsa, was second,,well clear of .the others The winner was' first out, as wer- ail the mounts of R. Hatch, who seems to bo riding as-well as ever.
", Several' horses wore'well backed ,in theconcluding event, though Domino finished up favourite; Achray and Pilgrim s Way made tho early running, but in tho straight the favourite beat everything, and won easily. Colleen Mary began last, but she put m a wonderful run from the bottom of. tho straight, nnd iast failed to get 6econd place. The winner is a sluggish colt, and was all the better for his race on the opening day.
