EXPORT SLAUGHTERING.

OPENING OF THE SEASON. Buyers for the oloVestablishcd meat freezing companies are already out among the farmers, and the export slaughtering season may be reckoned to have fairly commenced, although some companies will not do any large amount of killing for export until tho beginning of next month. An early start has been made by the North British and Hawke's Bay Freezing Company, Ltd., in their works at Port Ahuriri: Killing for export is here in full swing. At the local works of the Gear Company and Wellington Meat Export Company little has been done as yet beyond killing for local consumption. Both companies have been slaughtering lambs for export, but it is expected that they will take on extra hands at the end of the present month, and largely increase their output. The Waingawa Farmers' Meat Company, near Masterton, is awaiting the arrival of machinery by a vessel due this week. It is anticipated that the plant will be installed and the works, ready to commence operations by December 1. Now that the Melbourne Cup is over, New Zealand slaughtermen who visit Aus-

tralia are expected to return en masse by an early boat. The slaughtermen are noted followers of sport. It is on record that in the year of tho Burns-John-son fight there was a great dearth of slaughtermen in New Zealand for December operations. Many of them returned in the early part of January after having witnessed the famous contest on Boxing Day.
