PROVINCIAL CENTRES.

(From Our Special CorrespondentsJ

WOODVILLE

At the monthly meeting of the Woodville County Council the chairman (Councillor Nelson) extended a welcome to Councillor Macpherson, who recently returned from a visit to Scotland. The matter of the county boundary was gone into, when it was stated that the Dannevirke County Council had been receiving rates on land belonging in W ville, and the Dannevirke Council are to be asked to look into the matter with a view of adjusting finances. A settler wrote asking the council to remove the long dry grass from the road fronting his section, failing which, he would hold the council responsible in case of any fire. The council declined to recognise liability, but resolved to allow the settler to cut the grass. The Treasury wrote requesting payment of £31 Is. 3d. interest short paid without further delay. The council resolved to decline to pay, as it holds a receipt for £1000 paid in reduction of loan. This matter is in connection with the Harding-Road bridge. The Audit Department asserts that the costs were £1000 less than anticipated, and the reduction must be in Government grant, and not in the amount of loan. The Public Works Department wrote regarding the plan for the proposed bridge over the Mangapapa, on Lower Woodlands Road. The letter pointed out that the bridge had only one span, and this was sufficient to carry the water. It also forwarded a plan showing three spans. It was decided to point out that the council's plan provided for a bridge with two spans and 50ft. waterway, while two other bridges (less than two miles distant) only provided 30ft. and 44ft. respectively, and the river received no additional water after passing under them. It resolved to go into the question of providing a new bridge at Oringi creamery, as the present bridge is unsafe for traffic. The salaries of the clerk and overseer are to be increased by £10 each per annum, and also a motor bicycle is to be provided for the overseer's use. Tho cutting on .the Masterton Road, near Nelson's woolshed, is to be widened by 12ft. OTAKI. There was a lengthy sitting of the Otaki Magistrate's Court on Saturday, Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., presiding. Jas. Woods, for a breach of the licensing laws; was fined 5s. and costs 7s., while for permitting drunkenness, on licensed premises G. W. Moorhouse, licensee of the Manakau Hotel, was fined £10 and costs £2 12s., the license to be endorsed. Several parents were fined 2s. for not sending their children to school the requisite number of times, while, for riding a bicycle without a light at night time, an offender was fined 5s. and costs 7s. Several civil cases were dealt with.

The sad news reached here on Saturday, of the death of Mrs. Perry, daughter of Mr. Jeremiah Hurley of Manakau, and a highly respected resident of tho district.

An inquest will be held to-day. ."Guy Fawkes' Day" was celebrated here early and late by bands of noisy, leather-lunged boys. In the evening the "Guys" made good bonfires. The monthly meeting of the Road Board was held on Saturday, but little business was transacted. It was decided to discuss the matter of a small bridge with the settlers interested at Rangiuru, and to carry on the work on Beach Eoad in the same locality.- It was also decided to take the ranger off all district roads. It is stated here that a local hotel is again. about to change hands. The first of this season's Sunday trains reached here this week, and was fairly well patronised. FEILDING. The Feilding Technical School is making arrangements with ..Mr. A. P. D'Arcy, of Palmerston, to give a course of lectures on book-keeping.
