' THE PETROL TRAM QUESTION. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, November 7. General regret is expressed here at the fatal ending of the accident which befel Constable M'Cormick oil Thursday night. He had' been in the police force over thirty years, and was especially wellltnown in Christchurch, whither' the body has been taken for interment. Deceased leaves a wife and three children. The sixth "Gemischter. Obend" of the Palinerston Liedertafel is to be held in the Opera House on November. 17. Mr. F. W, A-. Mason will conduct. 'i'ho annual degree and law examinations commenced' to-day in' the Municipal Hall, Mrs. H. C. Mellspp acting as supervisor. A meeting of ratepayers is to be held on Thursday evening next to consider the question of the installation of trams in the borough. An offer has been made by Messrs. Heath and Co. to instal petrol trams, and Mr. Heath'will place his proposals before tho meeting, but from what can be learned of the feeling, of ratepayers, there is not much chance of the petrol scheme being adopted. Special services nre to be held in St. Patrick's Church during the week, when Monsignor Gilhm, administrator of the Auckland Catholic Diocese, will preach. •The local Orange Lodges held a special service at the Congregational Church last evening, when there was a large attendance. The Eev. D. Hird, M.A., preached a sermon appropriate to the occasion.

A requisition is-in course of signature in Palmerston praying tho Minister for Hallways to adopt a system of week-end excursions faros to Foxton. Mi , . D. Buick, M.P. for Palmerston, will present the requisition towards the end of the week.

At the Police Court to-dny, before Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., the Kairanga County Council sued Edward W. Collins for failing to cut down trees bounding a county road to a height of fifteen feet, llv. Innes, for the council, said that the case was laid under section KG of the Public Works Act, and was brought to ,tost the power of the council. A fine of Tβ. and costs was imposed.
