IRRESPONSIBLE CRACKERS.
THREE FIRES IN THE CITY. . The night of the anniversary of the late lamented Guido Fawkes, whoso' illstarred complicity in the attempt to blow the Most High and Mighty Pnnco James I First of England, with his noble Lords and faithful Commons, into space, is also an anxious ono for the police and the Fire Brigade. The irresponsible cracker has earned a reputatiou for smouldering and spluttering in obscure and difficult nooks and crannies, setting firo to buildings. Saturday, the anniversary of the deceased conspirator, was no exception to the anniversary of previous years, and as the direct result of' the squibs, crackers, rockots, etc., etc., the City Firo Brigade had to turn out to suppress three incipient conflagrations. The first call camo about 7.47 p.m., from Lawrcnco Street, Newtown, where some gorso had been sot alight, causing neighbours in tho vicinity some apprehension. Hav-. iiig suppressed tho outbreak, the brigade departed, but had hardly returned to tho station when another bell went, this- time from Littlo Buller Street, whoro somo dnmago was ( ono to the roof of a five-roomed dwelling before the flames were finally quenched. Call number three camo from 40 Abet Smith Street, whoro a four-roomed dwelling, occupied by Clara Lawrence, was sot alight by crackers. In neither of the foregoing outbreaks was any serious damage caused Action in each competition was prompt.
