—. »— —. — Mr. W. P. Bastin, one of Wellington's best-known amateur actors, has accepted an engagement from Mr. Geo. MusTove for the country tour of "Sweet Nell of Old Drury," with Miss Nellie Stewart as the star. -Mr. Bastin will play Percival, the provincial actor, in the, play mentioned. The funeral of Mr. J. J. Curtis, who died at • JohnsonviUe on Friday last, took place. yesterday morning.. The Rev. F. H. Petrio, of JohnsonviUe, conducted a service at St. Paul'B ProCathedral, and afterwards at tho grave in tho Bolton Street Cemetery. , There was a very large attendance of the family, relatives, and friends, including Mrs. Curtis, the wife of tho deceased, and her daughter, Miss Rita Curtis. The coffin was' covered by a large number of beautiful wreaths. Mrs. Curtis has received many messages of sympathy and condolence.
At a meeting of the Professorial Board of Otago University on Friday evening Mr. Montague Ongley, of Waitaki High School, was nominated as Otago's Rhodes' scholarship candidate. —Press Association.
Mr. William Grant, a . well-known South Canterbury sheep-breeder, died suddenly in bed of heart complaint on Saturday morning. He was aged 65 and a native of Inverness. He came to New Zealand in 1864 and soon ■ commenced stock dealing, supplying meat to the AVest Coast diggings. He prospered rapidly, and has been a largo shipper of frozen meat, and had interests in the Mackenzie runs.' Ho imported stud sheep from time to time, and was a successful exhibitor at the chief shows in the South Island. Ho was engaged in drafting sheep for the Christchurch Show on Friday. Ho was reputed to be very wealthy, and lent a holping hand to many farmers. The funeral takes place on Tuesday.—Press Association.
. The funeral of Mr. J. H. Fox, late locomotive engineer for tho Railways at Auckland, was largely attended on Thursday, the cortege including over one hundred representatives from all departments of the railway service. Wreaths _ were received from tho locomotivo engineer and staff at Addington, from the head office of the Railways, Wellington, from the locomotivo engineor's office, offices and workshops,' Newmarket, the locomotive running and car and wagon staff, and • the branches of tho Auckland district, including Thames, Paeroa, Hetorua, and Frankton brauches.
An old identity of Auckland _ 'in tho person of Mr, Hugh M'llhono died thore last Friday. Deceased, who was born near Belfast, Ireland, arrived iti New Zealand in the early sixties, and acted for some time as a schoolteacher, being .schoolmaster at Dovonport in the early days of tho North Shore, and later inspector of miners' rights at Thames. Ho always took an active part in political elections.
