t ADMIRAL SIR HARRY RAWSON. By Telegraph—Press Association—CopyriEht.. London, November 3. Admiral Sir Harry Rawson, ex-Gov-ernor of Now South Wales, is dead. ■

The late Admiral Sir Harry Holdsworth E-awson, C.B. (18S2), 1C.C.8. (1897), G.C.'B. (1906); 'was born at Walton-on-Hill, Lancashire, on November 5, 1813, and was cdueated at Marlborough' College. He joined the Navy as a cadet in 1857, and soon afterwards went to. China in H.JI.S. Calcutta, being present at the capture of the Peiho forts and of Peking. He took part' in all the engagements and being severely wounded on one occasion. Twice, .he was mentioned in dispatches for meritorious services, and for . three months he had command of 1300 Chinese troops which ■ were mobilised for the defence of Ningpo against the rebels. As a Commander he had charge of H.H.S. Hercules in the Channel Squadron from 1871 to 1871. In the following-year he was appointed to tlie flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet, and in 1878 issued a report on the capabilities of defence of the Suez Canal. In the same year he hoisted the British flag at Nicosia," capital of Cyprus, where he was for a short time military commandant. "■ As captain he was employed as principal transit officer during the Egyptian War . As Com-mander-in-Chief he went to the Capo and West Coast of Africa Station- in 1895, and in August of the same year landed a naval brigade and attacked and captured Jt'weli the stronghold of a rebellious chief. In 1896 he bombarded the palace of the Sultan of Zanzibar, ■ v;hich had been seized by a Pretender. ' In February, 1897, Admiral liawson organised and commanded a punitive naval expedition to Benin City,' and avenged the massacre of a political expedition which had been sent ' there. During the years 1898-1901 Admiral. K-aw-son was in command, of the Channel Squadron, and the following year (1002) was appointed Governor 'of. New South Wales, from which position hp retired in 1909. ''
