JOTTINGS FROM WANGANUI.
SPLENDID POET PROGRESS. i ißy Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) j Wanganui, November 3. Mr. Leslie Reynolds, consulting engineer of the Harbour Board, inspected the works at the river entrance yesterday, and expressed himself as being well satisfied with the effect which they are having',on the bar" and the adjacent coastline; also with the energetic and efficient way in which the moles aro being constructed' The board is also delighted with the continued improvement in the depth which is taking place. Official soundings yesterday, gave a least depth in the channel of sixteen feet. This was verified, to-day by the master of the steamer Petone, Captain Muir, who- had had a special sounding-line prepared, and brought the vessel in as slowly as possible, to enable him to,sound frequently, and carefully. Though he entered an hoar before high water, he found sixteen feet on the, crest of the bar. A gratifying feature is- the fact that this depth is not confined to a narrow channel, but has been found to extend ■ practically across the entire width of the entrance from mole toimolo.
