On the other hand Nonconformists consider that the church is making such amazing progress that it can do without endowment. "Mowbray's Annual ,, (Anglican) states that tb,e Welsh Church has made a conspicuous recovery and progress during the ■last eighty years, The rate of progress is ijluptrated by the fact that, whereas the population of the Diocese of St. David's increased by less than 6" per qent. between 188] and 1901, the increase in that diocese between 1877 and 1905 of the parochial clergy was-from 4iO to 517 j of Sunday services, from 78? to 1218 j of qompiuiiicants, from 26.58 D to 63,565; and of Sunday scholars from 25,000 to 47,847. Again, in the area of the South Wales coalfield, in the diocese of LlapdafF, where the population rose between 1831 and 1906 from 170,000 to 1,105,000, the number nf ohurches grew during the samo period from G'2 to 481, an increase whioh'more than kept pace with the growth of population,
