ESCAPED PRISONERS.
CAPTURED AFTER A STRUGGLE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Invercargill, November 1. The two escaped prisoners, M'Queen and Gordon, who have been at large since Friday, were captured this afternoon. The police throughout the district have been doing patrol duty night and day. AJbout 1 o'clock to-day a settler of Lochiol (15 miles by rail from Invercargill) infori<;l the police that two suspicious characters had been seen in the neighbourhood. The police immediately telephoned to tho Winton constable (M'Quarrie). Meanwhile the two men turned up at Brown's Hotel, went inside, and ordered drinks. The publican (Mr. Cronan) and his brother ' •hought 1 tho .visitors answered the description of the niissing prisoners, and while they • were talking the matter over, and the mtjn lingered in the hotel, Messrs, Jenkins (storekeeper) and If Kay (sawmiller) arrived.' Eventually the hotclkeepcr's brother mado up his mind to attempt a capture and rushed the men. They showed fight,'and Jenkins and MTfay joined in. While tho •struggle was going on Constable M'Quarrie galloped up opportunely and handcuffed tho suspicious ones, who turned out to bo in fact the escapees. _ A passing motorist offered the use of his car for conveyance of tho prisoners to Winton, and the 'settlers provided a motor cyclist to ride behind the car is a guard. In this wav the men were brought to Winton and locked up there'for the night. Both meu were fully clothed in ordinary garments, and the fact that they ordered drinks indicated the sossession of monejr.
