MR. NORTHCRCFT'S ALLEGATIONS
COMMENTS BY THE ATTORNEYGENERAL. Interviewed yesterday regarding the statements made by Mr. H. \V. Novthcroft, S.M., in Auckland on Monday, with reference to the alleged political interference with magistrates, the Hon. Dr: Fiudlay said lie was utterly at a loss to understand Mr. Northcroft's remarks. They came as un absolute surprise to him. No suggestion had ever ix.'..ucd- him as Minister for Justice of aitj tiling of the kind. On occasion he had been written to by persons witii cases before the Court, but had at all times uniformly refused to take any action whatever, the procedure in the matter of appeal to a higher. Court being open to those not satisfied with magisterial decisions. In conclusion, Dr. Findlay said he was quite unable id -understand Mr. NorthcrolVs remarks, and could only ask him to mention any circumstances which would bear out his statements. He (.Dr. Findiay) knew that his predecessor in oflice was just as careful as lie himself had teen to see that, no outside influence, political or otherwise, was allowed to 1 interfere with the judicial syskm.
