MELBOURNE CUP. CHEAT FINISH. COMEDY KING WINS BY A NECK. RIDDEN BY M'LACHLAN. NEW ZEALANDERS NOT PLACED. U7 Teleirraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. November 1, 6.30 p.m.) Flemlngton, November 1. This year's Melbourne Cup Meeting will long remain memorable in tlie Victoria Racing Club's annals.: It was fitting that the occasion of the club's jubilee Cup attracted one of the biggest gatherings on record. The city was already overcrowded, and inter-State boats during the week brought 5000 visitors, including 1000 from New Zealand'and Tasmania. The weather,: which was not promising, even on the opening day, . cleared on Cup morning, and pleased everybody.'.- Brilliant sunshine, a bright sky, and a gentle southerly .were conditions ; that could not' be surpassed. On the lawns an h.-ur before the first' race, started there was not standing room, while the b'ettiw; ring and paddock were crowded to suffocation. There was more' than usual interest in the racing,., on■ account of .the extraordinary reversals'of form and the perversity among the three-year-olds at' Randwick and Caulfield left even the best judges baffled. The. performances of Comedy King, nami, Alawa, and Parsee, and especially the New Zealand mare Artillerie's extraordinary run in the Caulfield Cup left .the public in-a. state of perplexity. The. only really consistent performer was Trafalgar, who was held in -firm public favour,, while tne New Zealander, Lady Lucylad • hosts of . admirers. In the vice-regal box, midst a most gorgeous gathering, were Dudleys, Carmichaels, Bosanquets, Poores, and large staffs. ..When, the horses went to the post every point was occupied.Thousands saw. nothing , until the '' horses were, finishing;, '. Comedy King always had a good place,' and put in fast work at the- right . time. Alawa galloped better- than, on - any previous occasion, and at one time was proclaimed . the winner. There-was intense excitement when Trafalgar came at Comedy .King, ivho, contesting- stride for stride , along 'ne, straight, just managed to win. NOTESj AND COMMENTS,

Nominations for the Feilding Jockey Club's meeting close on Friday next.
Acceptances for tho first day's events at the Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club's meeting are due on Friday.
A final payment .for the New Zealand Cup is due to-night.
Tho racehorses Ruemac, Ascalon, and Xavier were shipped south by the Mararoa last evening. By the same' boat jockeys E. Murtagh (now quite recovered from bis recent accident), and "Sid" Reid were also passengers.
The victory of Comedy King in the Melbourne Cup will be a severe facer to the ring as his owner, Mr! Green, has consistently supported the. English-bred horse since the appearance of ' the weights. After his success at Randwick when he defeated Prince Foote, the money came so freely for the son of Persimmon that he was made favourite.' Later it was reported that he had contracted influenza, and this caused him to weaken in tho quotations. At the call of the card on Tuesday morning Trafalgar ,was first fancy, and it is unlikely that ho receded on'the.day. Comedy King is a beautiful ( black horse, standing about .15.3. He is' by -Persimmon, the late King's Derbv winner from, Tragedy Queen (imp.) Ho was trained by J. Lynch and carried 7st. 111b., which is quite, a reasonable weight for a four-year-old. It may be mentioned here that, though the colt ranks as' a four-year-old, he is notreall.v three and a half years old, having been foaled in England in May, 1907. He has proved a most profitable investment for his owner, as ho won the richly-endowed Caulfield Futurity Stakes and also the Spring Stakes at the recent A.J.C., meeting. He has now set the seal on. his fame by winning tho Melbourne Cup, and will bo n very valuablo siro for his owner's Shipley stud. With Trafalgar, who ran second, prob.sbly the honours of the race rest; He carried the impossible. Cup burden of 9st. 21b.. and bea!t all but : the' winner.
The chestnut horse has consistently demonstrated that he is a-wonderful stayer under big weights, and amongst his successes are the Loch: Plate, two miles, A.J.C. Autumn Stakes, oue. mile and a half, Sydney Cup, ; two miles, A.J.C. . Plate, three • miles,. Spring Stakes, one mile and a half, and the Randwick Plate, two milos (twice).
.As was • anticipated, the track work at. Riccarton yesterday .was full of interest, and' several well-backed 'candidates put up good gallops. Consequent upon his good showing; Meriwa is now in-better demand,,:while Diabolo has also hardened in -the market. : There is a disposition amongst-the ragmen fo lay Bridge, and this is interpretsd to moan that ,all is not .well with. Mr. E. J. Watt's "representative. As there is another payment due this evening, a •bettor idea will be gained as to whether or not there is anything, amiss with the Possible gelding. The New Zealand-bred Kerlie (Stepniak—Melodious) won . the Moonee Valley Cup on October 22. The Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club will hold its annual meeting on the Ashhurst racecourse on Wednesday, December 28. In an advertisement in this issue the programme will be found. RACING FIXTURES.
